are Jerry's and Carlos rentals the only rentals availabel on the island? I have read several negative comments about both.

Good morning,
Jerry (older Suzukis), Carlos (new Jeeps & golfcarts), & Dick & Cathy (Volkswagon Thing) are the three rental car options. All are good choices, just depending on your vehicle preference.
