Ummm.... Why would you want an umbrella? Really, what's the point of going to such a beautiful beach if not to enjoy the weather? Forgo the expense (if you want a break from the heat, there's always the water and a plethora of trees), hit the trails, and take in all the island has to offer!! -- Never litter and always tip your barkeep!

Man, I can't wait to get back. I proposed to my girlfriend on Flamenco in January, and loved it so much that we're getting married on Vieques next May (wedding in Esperanza, 2 week honeymoon camping on Flamenco). I didn't think that she would want to go camping for a honeymoon, but she loved it so much that she jumped at the idea!

Really, screw the umbrella and love the beach!!!!

Having seen the sunburns of people who stay out in the sun while enjoying the beach, I think that 20 bucks sounds like a deal for anyone planning to stay for hours at a time.

Just joshin', but the number one shortage on Culebra isn't gasoline or Presidente; it's shade! I use spf 70 when on island, and I still had to sit on the veranda the last 2 days of my last visit. Heed my words and let someone else make your dermatologist's boat payment. Oh wait. I just read your sig-line...carry on.

BTW, the latest news from in-the-know dermatologists is that anything over
SPF 50 is awaste of money.

I have to admit I have never quite understood the logic of traveling to the Caribbean, going to the beach, and then paying for shade. I'm with Cap'n, there's trees and the water if you need to cool off, and as long as you've got sunscreen and some common sense you should be OK. Besides, we all gotta die of something, and over-exposure to the sun beats a lot of other things I can think of. Going to the beach and renting an umbrella seems kinda like all the folks where we live who move out into a nice wooded area, then cut down all the trees so their place ends up looking just like a lot in town.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding, Cap'n. Hope your ferry ride to Vieques goes more smoothly than your trip to Culebra last time!

I have to say, I used to be of the same mindset as Cap'n Wacky. Why would I need an umbrella, just wear my sunscreen and hop in the water when I get too hot, right? It had worked for all our visits over about 5 years going to Culebra.

Then we went down for a couple weeks last July/August. Holy @!#$. I walked onto Flamenco with kids in tow, kindly refusing the umbrella purchase yet again. We found a decent patch of sand not too far away and set up shop, nowhere near any of the already spoken for shade trees. Within half an hour I thought I might possibly melt. How could I have not noticed how hot the sand was on the walk to our spot? The great breeze was still there, why was it so much hotter? I scanned the horizon in the hopes some clouds would offer a brief respite from the volcanic heat beating down on me from the sun. None. Not a one.

I attempted to run on tiptoe back to the umbrella vendor, who by now only had two left, one of which was being pointed at by an older couple just arriving. I shamefully barged up to the umbrella vendor and asked for an umbrella. He hesitatingly looked at me, said "una momento" and conferred with his associate, who was talking with the older couple. Only one umbrella left, the second one was broken. His helper picked up the umbrella and started walking toward the water with the older couple! Long story short, I begged and pleaded with my mangled Spanish and best pitiful face. They eventually found another umbrella. From where, I don't know. I didn't care.

My advice to Cap't Wacky---never say never. Eating your words always leave a little bitter aftertaste. Though not so bad after you wash it down with an ice cold Medalla.

MJ--would you and your cart umbrella like a little private time ;) ????

I should have clarified a bit -- when we went, and when we go again, we were camping, and there is plenty of shade in the campgrounds. Then again, we went in January. I guess I'll see in May!!

As a side note, when camping I had awful back pains and couldn't sleep for days. I finally decided to dig a sand pit on the beach that would contour my back, got some booze, and finally slept for about 6 hours -- during mid-day, with a t-shirt on. I can't put enough emphasis on the farmer's tan I got, and that was January. I would suggest doing what you feel is right for you.

And MJ, I hope you have some more of that home-made soap when I return, it lasted nearly forever, and my fiancee loved the scent!!! She loved it!

I can't wait to come back (May 6th......too long, way too long), and I really don't care about the ferry, it only made it more memorable. You locals are so freakin lucky its sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MJ--Not for nothin', but your umbrella looked at me first. Just sayin'.

Cap'n Wacky--I totally know where you are coming from. We had even been there towards the end of August before and never felt the need for an umbrella. Umbrellas are for kinda, like, you know, OLD people, right? I mean, that's what my MOM needed when we took them down there. But that trip I was completely humbled by the intensity of the sun and heat. My experience with May is that it is usually quite pleasant, nothing near the furnace of hell heat I felt that July. I would have absolutely fought that old couple for the umbrella if I thought I could get it. Not my proudest moment.

And I agree with the comfort of the molded sand lounge chair!! I dug myself one under my newly rented, gloriously shady umbrella. It was cool and comfortable and I'm sure I looked absolutely graceful getting out of it, too!

We just returned at midnight from 2 wonderful weeks on Culebra. The price for two loungers and an umbrella is now $25, which I gladly paid. My own mom ended up with sun posioning and had massive raised scars on her back until she died. I am fair skinned and still burn even when applying 30+ every 30 min and that is without even going in the water. Give me a chair and umbrella day. We had both at Casa del Sol, but were too lazy to drag them to the beach. One day, they would not put umbrellas up due to the wind and the two loungers were $20. I personally wear a rash guard while in the water to protect my upper arms and back. This has saved many painful burns during several hours of snorkeling.
