a group of us are coming to the island in October. I think we have lodging squared away. however we have some questions.

more questions will follow im sure, because as we read through this forum we are learning new things to ask about.

First group of Questions:

One thing some of us are wanting to do is go spearfishing. I understand you can only spearfish while free-diving. Also i was reading that some beaches do not allow fishing.

Where is spearfhishing allowed? if beach fishing isnt allowed does that also pertain to spearfishing off in the waters?

Do we need to obtain some type of a license before we hit the water?

what is the average daily rental on a vehicle there? 5 people need to be able to squeeze into it. not looking for comfort. (i have looked at 2 websites for there but couldnt get a good answer on $$ per day)

another question:

what is the best way for 5 people to get from the airport on PR to the other side of the island to where the culebra ferry is?

Jerry's jeeps (depending on model) run $50 a day plus tax and are old but reliable models. Jerry gives a great 30 minute seminar using his hand-drawn maps. Carlos' jeeps are new, maybe bigger too, and more $. If you select the model on his website you will get the cost per day (before taxes?).

Lodging might not be squared away. Just learned that some places are closed during October. back to square one on this part.

We just came back from the island and stayed at casa robinson. has 8 individual rooms, small but very clean and like new. Is on a hill overlooking the bay, but a great view and on a paved road near the departure end of the airport. super nice landlord too. i think one of the best views there.

room cost varies by room size, ours was $125 night plus tax for a single queen bed with dresser, shower/tub, microwave, separate sink, refrig, and 100+ channels on tv. we were very happy with it. can look on tripadvisor.com, do search for casa robinson.

If you go to the Transport section of this website, then click "getting there", then "to get to Fajardo" you will find several options. We have used John one way both of our trips, and have rented a car both trips as well. Last year we rented the car in Fajardo and visited El Yunque before dropping the car at SJU; this year we rented the car at SJU and dropped it in Fajardo.

Both options are more expensive than the public cars, but quicker and less hassle, and if you split the cost 5 ways it's not so bad. John can be reached by email, and his rate depends on where in San Juan he picks you up. Just tell him how many people and how much luggage, and when and where to pick you up. He can stop on the way if you need to eat, shop, etc.

Jerry has all sorts of sizes, but mostly suzuki samurai, some may look like beaters but they get you where you need to go. Mark: 30 minutes for the map and advice? I think it just feels like that, dude's a trip, but is very passionate and knowledgeable about the island. only minor remarks: he won't reserve a jeep until your arrival day is solid and once cursed a friend when she canceled her partial stay reservation when she found someone else to rent her a jeep for the full week (it was a popular time)

check out Culebra Island Realty to get an idea of the range and rates of lodging available although some owners handle it independently it'll give you an idea of the going rate/space.

And I believe that most folks only shoot the marine life with a Nikon. Most of the island and surrounding waters are a wildlife preserve.

I shoot marine life with my olympus too. however the marine life that im going to eat that night I enjoy shooting with my speargun.

I found info on spear in culebra here http://www.culebrahotel.com/culebrafishing.html -- but its lacking in details.

Richard, too bad Jerry did that to your friend.

He did help us very much on our departure day when Air Flamenco shafted us on our departure time (another story which I will relate later on my review of Air Flamenco!). His help enabled us to make the flight; otherwise we would have missed our connection in San Juan.

It did take about 30 minutes for the whole process of Jerry's seminar, paperwork, dealing with other customers, etc. I guess the seminar part was less than 30 minutes! Even tho his jeeps are a little roughed up, ours did get us everywhere in our 4 days/3 nites there.

Sisco, try tripadvisor.com for lodging rates for a variety of lodging types. Not all locations give their cost, but a good portion do. That site, plus this site, prepared us very well for our trip to the island 2 weeks ago. Thanks to all of you bloggers who gave us such good advice!

Also check out Culebra Vacation Planners for vacation rentals. We stayed at Casa Culebra (upstairs) and enjoyed it very much. The upstairs unit has 3 bedrooms and can accommodate 8 if you use the daybeds, which didn't look too comfortable to us. There are 2 queen beds and 2 twins in the bedrooms. The downstairs unit has 2 bedrooms and a daybed, and says it accommodates up to 5 using the daybed. Fantastic views, close to town, nice and clean, all appliances worked fine, wireless internet, grill on the deck, etc. No TV, but who needs it? You don't come to Culebra to watch TV! Lots of stairs, but the tradeoff is the great view and cool breeze.

Mark, I personally have no complaints about the guy, in that situation, my friend would have had to either do without for a few days or lose the full-term rental. But I'd never hesitate to use him again, I found a Jerry map this Spring while moving, and I'm trying to figure out how to frame a document that has 2 sides.

I'm guessing he was caught off guard (my friend can be abrupt)

my kidding about the 30 minutes is that after a coupla trips, well let's just say not too much changes and while I appreciate the true feeling he has for the place I know how to get to Zoni, just let me know what's new. although in retrospect I sorta wished I'd dummied up and let the whole presentation flow (but it was getting towards 7 and needed to hit the grocery store)

Hey Richard, lol, I have the same feeling, just tell me the new stuff and give me another map! That way I can frame with both sides showing! Wish I could video tape the seminar. We hope to go back in 14 months, probably will get another Jerry Heap, er sorry , Jeep since it could still pull Mr. Robinson's hill to his casa.

Since you have visited a few times, maybe you can fill me in on why there seems to be beaches showing up on some maps and not others. I've noticed beach names on older maps that are not labeled in newer maps. I am not referring to Jerry's maps now, some of those maps I'm still deciphering!

I can try to find these names again if you need them. I don't think it's as simple as a difference between the spanish names versus the English names. I noticed two areas labeled as beaches which are not labeled at all according to the more popular or common maps. We are hoping on our next trip to hit 5 more beaches we missed on the first trip, mainly for snorkling.

I got a kick out of Jerry using the side of a pencil to rub over my credit card to make an impression -- he didn't even use the old-fashioned machine that you put the card in and run back and forth. Guess on the plus side, when the phones are down he can still take credit cards!

there could be a whole thread on Jerry (and maybe there is!) My guess is that sometimes a beach might be defined by a really small patch and a storm can take it out, I've never been the type to methodically hunt down each, just whatever I feel up to that day (although when I make it back I do want to say "get bent" to any usually timid companions and hit Soldado

hey richard, soldado was one of the beaches we miwssed because we were warned off from it being too rough. What is it like for snorkling? Sorry to hijack this thread onto snorkling questions!

Soldado is my favorite snorkeling / shore diving beach if you can get down there. It's very shallow, and there are lots of juveniles there. The coral is kind of beat up, but I like it for the ledges and the fish life. We once saw a school of baby squid there - little squishy round creatures with nothing but eyeballs. We also once saw a chain moray while snorkeling. Pretty rare to find those when diving, so it was even more tremendous to see one without scuba gear.
