Jellyfish in August?

Hello All,

I was in Culebra in mid-September 2008 and had a terrible time with jellyfish. I know they were mostly moon jellyfish, but we were not able to enjoy snorkeling at Carlos Rosario or Tamarindo that time because we were constantly avoiding droves of jellies. There were also occasional tiny stinging organisms that left small stings on our arms and legs, but these were actually less of a hassle than the omnipresent moon jellies, which we sometimes had to swim UNDER because they had us trapped at the surface.

Anyways, I am planning to go to Culebra in late August/early September of this year and was wondering about the jellyfish situation. Was our previous experience a fluke? Was it related to something else than the time of year (unusual weather patterns, cycle of moon, etc)?

Good afternoon,
I live here & thus swim year round (currently training for a tri, thus do my swimming at Tamarindo/Flamenco depending on waves) & have never encountered any jellyfish problems.

To my knowledge there isn't any specific time that they would be a problem here. We previously lived in the BVI's & didn't experience any particular seasonal issues with jellyfish there either.

Thank you for your reply (on here and TA). I guess it was just an unusual occurrence in Sept 2008... maybe some unusual currents that brought jellies to the west coast. I'll report back if I encounter any problems next month.

As Jimmy Buffet reminds us, Jellyfish Don't Pay Rent. This is because they go where the currents take them. The last time I saw a jelly (sea walnut)was in July of '96, and I've never seen a man o' war there, touch wood.

I, too, was there in mid Sep, 2008.
According to my old calender, bet the 17th and the 20th, there were some major thunder storms which caused terrible mud slides and a lot of flood all over on Culebra as well as on the main island.
I was told that it was a rare occurrence in some 100 years or some long time.
The mud slides made the ocean so muddy for days and people didn't want to go in the water.
So I guess the weather was unusual at the very time and you must have encountered a rare occasion!

Those mud slides are due, primarily, to unsustainable development grading work for roads and high-density property being built illegaly by people who care much more for money than they do about Culebra. Recent rains have done similar damage to Flamenco Beach, the iconic, white sand beach seen in virtually every Culebra travel piece. Sorry to inject politics into the thread, but all who love the island will be needed in the effort to stop the ruination this mindless greed causes.
