water taxis, rain

Hello all,

Is it possible to make water taxi arrangements at Flamenco, or are all the "better" ones at the dock in town? We'll be arriving late in the day tomorrow (7/29), and camping (no car) at Flamenco for 4 or 5 nights, may go back into town only after the "witching hour", i.e., after that time when all the publicos & tourist services have left. I've read good thiings about Capt. Jack, Capt. Bob, Guilen, Pat, Taz, and am thinking the glass bottomed boat might be a good option for my teenaged daughter, who's not real big on snorkeling (which, she claims, stems from the rude awakening that came when, as a little girl, she was nipped by one of those cute little sunfishies). Possible to arrange with any of these w/out going into town, and do any of the water taxis leave from Flamenco?

Rereading some older posts, I'm wondering how wise my decision to not rent a car is; given that, on Saturday, we'll go to a remote beach, and will go to dinner a couple times, maybe other interesting spots for a bit on another day, especially if it's rainy (does 60% chance of showers mean it'll shower a bunch, or just that we're very likely to get showered on briefly?), anyhow, should I reconsider & rent something from Jerry? Daughter, so far, won't get on the back of a scooter with me driving, plus not so fun in the rain. Sorry, I know "getting around" has been beaten to death, so I'll go back and re-search. Would be helpful to know, though, if it does actually ran & stay cloudy for much of a day this time of year, or if it's just showers.

Thanks once again for your help!

MJ - if I've read between the lines correctly, you have a store or business in town. Can you tell what & where? Thanks!

I can give you some answers, Is-there-any-shade...

MJ's cart is on the other side of the little bridge in town. It's always there. But she isn't necessarily. So keep trying! By the way, there's a good grocery store over there, too (Milka's).

When it rains, it's almost always brief. But once in awhile it can pour. Ignore the "60% chance" reports. They are almost meaningless in my experience. Now if a tropical storm hits the area, that's a different story.

Jerry's car rentals are popular. So are Carlos'. Jerry's are older and cheaper.

My family group of seven camped for ten nights and never had a rental car. Why drive to remote parts of the island when you can hike to several from Flamenco? I say, save your money for eating well in town.

As far as I know, all diving, boating, tour, etc arrangements are made in town, not at Flamenco. Flamenco is not a good place for boats to land.

Publicos are only $2 each way and they run constantly to and from Flamenco during the daytimes and early evenings. Be sure to get a phone number from a couple of them so that you can call when/if needed. A great time in the evening to get publicos is when the ferry arrives.

As for your daughter's fear of snorkeling, I suggest you have her read your post. It just might trigger her to realize that a sunfish incident doesn't have to a lifelong trauma and it should never stop her from one of the most beautiful and enjoyable activities that one can do in the Caribbean!

Thank you, C-Y-T-a-L-o-t-F, that's helpful. Since I think the last ferry business is late afternoon, I guess that just means we head in a little early for dinner, browse the shops & the cart, then go eat; Franklin the tent rental guy said after that, they charge taxi rates.

BTW, discovered a great cheap lightweight tent, if you're in need, given your large family. It's a two person 3-season tent that weighs less than 3 lbs that goes for $22-$25! It's the Texsport Knollwood bivy tent - google it, & you'll find them if you need them.

Shade, there's a ferry that gets in around 8:30pm. Perfect timing! After that, it's not so easy to find a publico without calling one up.

That's a very cheap tent! I'm in good shape with my current tent, though.

By the way... Don't forget that Flamenco charges per tent, not per site. If you're under 60 years old, it's $20 per tent.

No! I didn't realize that (per-tent instead of per-campsite)! Thanks, C-Y-T-a-L-o-t-F, though I'm not sure I'm in much of a position to change that, since I'm a wicked bad snorer (section E is for others' sake, as well as our own peace and quiet). But as luck would have it, I just turned 61 last month, never would have thought to ask about what I'm guessing is a discount for 60 & over. So thanks for that, too.

Didn't know about the 8:30 ferry, either. Thank you.

You two are funny! I think you should try to arrange next time to coincide visits...though your i.n.i.t.i.a.l. greetings may be laborious.

Thanks, Mort, for answering all of those questions and for taking care of Chuck locating me. Being as it is, almost officially, the end of July, my whereabouts are soon going to be unknown. Unknown to me as well, but SOME place that isn't on the corner!

I'll be there tomorrow though, until one or so. I think.

Oh, I forgot one thing. If we actually DO get rain, locals will be cheering, due to our very serious lack of rain. But water DOES get transported to the campground for showers and toilets, no worries. If it rains, it will be a warm rain, so I suggest dancing in it. We will!

Chuck, it's only $10 per tent when you're over 60! Bonus!

But you're snoring might relegate you to section F. It's not a bad section, but it's not reachable by vehicle or by foot. Some people are able to successfully crawl in and out, though.

MJ, you'll be sure to post to the board your eventual whereabouts, right?

I will, as long as I have access...and time to do something other than nothing else I'm enjoying doing. I know you all can carry on brilliantly without me (and I mean that! what a great crew gathered...saw Frank here yesterday on his way off island, how nice to see faces of those who make me laugh!).
Oh, and just in case, I'm only going for a longish holiday...Culebra is stuck with me!

MJ, I must have misunderstood your post. I thought you meant that your cart would be moving.

So do I have this correct... You're going on a walkabout, destination unknown, but not forever. And you will eventually be back to your cart in the same place by the bridge?

Yes (well, Florida and North Carolina and I don't know), yes, yes. And yes, the only way I'll not have the cart by the bridge is if it is moved by forces of nature that I don't have anything to do with!
