any way to avoid rooster noise?
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Robert Campbell (---.CSGS.ADMIN.NYU.EDU)

Hi - Me again. Still trying to figure out if Culebra will be a good fit for us for a vacation in January.

I keep reading about the roosters crowing all night, etc. I like animals a lot, but I can see how that could be annoying on a short vacation (we wouldn't really have a chance to get used to it and drown it out).

Is there anywhere on the island where the roosters are less prevalent? Or are they everywhere? Are they near the beach at Flamenco?

Thanks again!

suck it up dude.

they're really not that bad. some of us (myself included and I'm possibly the worst) just like to gripe - it's sort of self validating if there's something to complain about. somehow it's more real if there's a scab to pick.

The thing is, I'll be wearing earplugs anyway - because my partner snores. But, he won't be a happy camper if he keeps getting woken up. So, it's more for him than me. I can deal with the roosters - not sure I can deal with a cranky person who hasn't gotten enough sleep...

There are fewer roosters in the west side of the island ... towards Zoni. I don't ever recall hearing them out in Punta Del Viento or Northview or Zoni. The rooster noise is much more prevelant in town.

It's funny how any situation can viewed from different vantage points. The times we stayed in the vicinity of a rooster I was kinda psyched because it got me out of bed earlier and I got to enjoy more of my day awake on Culebra rather than asleep on Culebra. My first trip to the island (1998) we stayed on in the Punta Aloe area and the mail plane flew over our house ... er I mean over my bed ... sometime between 4:30am and 5:30am. I am a light sleeper and it woke me up every time. I witnessed a few spectacular sunrises thanks to that plane!

Hola! We have stayed at Posada La Hamaca (near town) and near the airport (Casita Tropical) and both locations can be considered as noisy but, they weren't. Both places have AC. When the AC is on at night and your so tired from a fun day at the beach, you don't hear anything, at least we didn't. We think it's the local music from the Puertorrican Mother Nature, along with the coqui, crickets and nice island breeze. Think of the roosters as your alarm clock, wake up early and take advantage of an early start. Get a hammock and have a mid day nap to recuperate. Happy travels! J

I've never heard roosters at Flamenco. But I've sure heard them in and near town.

Just a side note..I think the roosters are part of the ambiance of the island. After the first night you don't even hear them. The beauty of the island, the friendly people, the beaches, the food..all outweigh a little cock a doddle dooing.... Relax and enjoy...oh, I think the snoring would bother me more!

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

Earplugs work. I use them anytime I travel, and especially if I am sharing a room. I carry spares for the companion; after cocktails I sometimes snore, too.

Thanks everyone for responding! I guess the fact is the roosters don't keep people away - so they can't be THAT bad, I guess. I just seems like almost everyone mentions them in their hotel reviews - so I just wanted to find out a bit more about the noise. We're going to the southern Caribbean area of Costa Rica next March, and I've heard the howler monkeys start howling at 4:30 or 5 AM, so I guess it's the same thing really. We probably will be so tired from all that relaxing during the day that it won't matter - thanks!

Well, the howler monkeys are intermittent and only at dusk and dawn. The roosters on Culebra go 24/7. You'll be just about asleep in the hammock at 2 in the afternoon, and one will walk through the yard and start cackling. When one starts, they all start. Sometimes I wake at 2 am in the morning, and I realize it's the dead silence that woke me up, and then a rooster CROWS. They are noisy and annoying, and if you don't think you guys can take it, then Culebra's not the place for you. If you are a light sleeper, you will go home more exhausted than when you arrived. It's happened to me numerous times. :-(

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Hmmm...bummer. Yeah, the whole point of going away is to get away from this noisy, construction-filled city I once loved but can barely stand any longer! So, I guess we have some thinking to do. Thanks for the honesty about the noise - I'd rather not pretend it won't be annoying and then regret it once I'm there. But Playa Flamenco looks so beautiful! What to do?!

Honestly, I mainly decided on PR because the flights are so crazy cheap from NYC - they seem to be the least expensive airfares to anywhere in the Caribbean or Central America. I guess we could just stay on the mainland? Maybe Rincon? Not as exciting to me, but an option.

I'll keep investigating...

If you don't go to Culebra because of roosters, you may need more help than just getting out of the city!

Hola! Maybe you can catch one and find a nice Puertorrican that can cook it for you! LOL!!! They are tasty. Once roosters know that one of their kind has gone to another world, or another stomach, they get kind of quiet. It only lasts for a day, though. It is good protein. Happy travels! J

Well, of course I'm not going to decide not to go to Culebra just because of the roosters - I was just griping out loud. One person has said she has experienced sleep deprivation due to the crowing - so that's a bit daunting! Definitely don't want that on a vacation.

I guess what I'm trying to do is figure out where on the island is the quietest - and I think I've gotten some good ideas. Thanks everyone!

Robert, I think you're wise to take this into account. One man's rooster is another man's ROOSTER.

A couple years ago, my neighbor raised a baby chicken that turned out to be a rooster. She grew attached to it and would not easily give it up.

It's the closest that my wife and I have ever come to plotting murder (of both the rooster AND the neighbor). Finally, after a couple months, she found another home for it.

I've only stayed near town for one night, and the roosters are still a bad memory. However, the other two people who were with me weren't bothered at all.

I like Jeannie's idea of putting a head on a pike. True, it's gratuitous violence, but it sends a message to the other roosters.

Just another perspective here...I have never been bothered by roosters, mosquitos, no see-ums, cats, dogs, frogs or any other animal while on Culebra. Stayed in town, two different locations. Did have a little fish chase me around at Flamenco but he wasn't annoying at all. I think that perhaps it's all in your level of tolerance and if you are from NY, Robert Campbell, then Culebra will seem (and is) HEAVEN.

Ha ha! Hopefully, we won't have to resort to such drastic measures! We had a pet rooster when I was a kid, but we raised him with a duck - so he thought he was a duck and never crowed. He never quacked either, so I don't know what that was about.

So, it sounds like where there are people, there are roosters? Sort of like pigeons, here in the city. They know where their food comes from.

"If you don't go to Culebra because of roosters, you may need more help than just getting out of the city!" LMAO!! Thats the best answer of them all....
Bring a bag of small pebbles and the first morning you hear one give a little toss..not to hit them but just a little warning to stay away from your area....that seemed to work for us. Otherwise drink more the night before and you will sleep right through it.

We have stayed at Melones Beach house and never had a problem with roosters! Biggest problem was the Pearly Eyed Thrasher bird who kept trying to steal our fruit if we left it uncovered. On-the-other hand, we did stay at La Casita, in town, and were aware of the roosters every night. According to my wife they almost were drowned out by my snoring/

Well, even though I posted the most scathing rooster report, they don't keep me away either (awake, yes; away, no). I find that enough scuba diving, mixed with a few drinks at night helps me to sleep through the noise most nights. We spend anywhere from 5-10 nights on the island at a time, and by about the third night, I'm good.

Whatever you do, don't do this:

Ah, La Casita. Twice I stayed there with a guy who pitched in semi-pro ball. He slept on the day bed in the front room and kept a little pile of baseball sized coral hunks for keeping his arm supple in the off-season. We loved the little black kitty and the banana quits that came with the place. I sure wish it was still for rent.

I'm with Debbie, wear yourself out swimming and diving, knock back a coupla snorts and get up early. (and I'm a confirmed sleep-late kinda guy)

if you're not a teetotaler. is there any problem that it can't solve (or cause) or exacebate for that matter.

ok snorkeling is prob. healthier.

For what it's worth, my sister used to live in Manhatten, in the Village area. She and her husband visited us at the very quiet, rural area in which we lived (far from the city). Neither of them could sleep for the first few nights because it was too quiet! So, who knows, the roosters might help you sleep.
