Getting to Luis Pena and Culebrita

so I looked around on the website about the services available to get to each LP and Culebrita - they're kinda pricey!! $45 per person!!?? What are we traveling on a yacht? I've taken ferrys from Europe to Africa for cheaper than that! Not to mention the ferry to get to Culebra is WAY cheaper than that!!

so my question is - are these prices for real? if we just want to go spend the day on Culebrita or LP then we have to pay $45 per person!?!! seems pretty steep...

can we rent kayaks for the day anywhere? anybody got any prices on those? we're a very active bunch and would be totally find kayaking to either island.

someone give me some good news here!! :)

My understanding is that the government subsidizes the ferries to/from Culebra, whereas the water taxi folks are trying to earn a living.

For kayaks, you can speak with Jim. His wife runs Barbara Rosa's restaurant & he produces the Culebra Calendar. Normally he has people call him up before 9:30am on the day they would like to head out & that way he is able to access the weather conditions.

You might be able to negotiate that a bit if you have more people on the boat. See if you can get a group together. As Terrie said, people are trying to make a living on a small island where there is no other source of industry income besides tourism.

45 will not even pay for your gas going to Culebrita in a small dinghy. that's why they have a minimum of persons on top of that price ..

WE tried to negotiate a five dollar reduction since we had the highest capacity of people on board...we did not get it..but to be honest...we felt the price was fine as it was worth every penny to spend a day at Culebrita and Luis Pena not to mention our driver Gulian(spelling) was awesome.
We, too, had planned to rent Kayaks to go to Luis Pena. We were disappointed that we weren't able to do so..but coming back from Luis Pena made me appreciate being on the water taxi..it was so rough..not sure where we would have ended our journey.
It is vacation...that is how we look at it. Pay the going rate....contribute to Culebra economy...and with the cost of gas right now..

Have a wonderful time. I miss Culebra

Yeah, any boater will tell you that gas prices are making boating a VERY expensive hobby. Even more expensive than it is otherwise! LOL.

One advantage, though, is that high gas prices mean there will be less and less powerboats coming from PR. A few months ago, I visited Culebrita on a friend's catamaran on a weekend (minor holiday), and there were nearly 30 powerboats tethered side by side at the beach. Not exactly the getaway we had hoped for.

I've also been there when when we were the only ones! And believe it or not, we were boarded by the coast guard, right there in Culebrita, looking for people smugglers. (Fortunately, we had already dropped off our load a couple hours earlier.)

Seriously, it turned out to be just a training exercise, but it was still a little bit unsettling to be boarded by a a group of people carrying large guns.

Don't forget that every outing to an island requires 2 round trips - one to take you out and one to bring you back. What's marine gas cost now? 4.50 or 5.00 a gallon? With boat payments, maintenance, and insurance, it's hard to make a living. Kayaks are an option, but with currents and swell, I would be very cautious and only try it if approved by Jim, who possesses the local knowledge necessary for safe operation. And even then, this is not a safe choice unless the renter is experienced and fit.

Doug, I couldn't agree more. Not only would it be physically very difficult to kayak out to Culebrita, but there can be a lot of boat traffic, some traveling quite fast, and some after serious drinking.

Years ago I let my girlfriend convince me that she 'knew' how to kayak - I wound up up towing her on her kayak against the current back from Luis Pena. I am sure you can imagine who was not pleased .. and who was just a teeny bit sore the next day ;)

I have been to Culebra on 4 occasions now. Our last trip was the week of April 21st. Just a couple heads up on a water taxi to Culebrita. It costs $45 a person, they drop you off and leave you on the Island and come back approx. 3-4 hours later. We were the only three on the Island the day we went. I didn't bring a cell phone as I was on vacation but did wonder what would we do in case of emergency? We also didn't know we should bring shoes to hike over rocky Culebrita to other snorkeling spots.

It was a wonderful day anway. I just wanted to give a couple tips regarding things I was unaware of.

In previous snorkeling trips, we snorkeled and the boat stayed moored nearby in case of emergency. I guess this is the difference between a water TAXI service and a reserved snorkeling trip.
