Are Passports Necessary?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

A friend at the office just insisted that US Passports are necessary to travel to Culebra. I think he's incorrect, but it doesn't hurt to check. Also, I will be coming with my wife, daughter and 2 of her friends. My worry is that the kids who aren't mine will get some kind of hassle from the TSA.

Your friend is VERY incorrect. The advertisement from the PR Tourism Company is that the great thing about traveling to Puerto Rico is that NO PASSPORT IS REQUIRED!!! Culebra is part of PR so, NO passport required either. Now, you are traveling with 2 minors that are not your children, I would find out from TSA and your airline carrier if you need a form signed and sealed from a notary public granting you permission from the minors parents to travel with these minors and in case of accident granting you permission for treatment of these. It may be that you don't need anything but, better to be safe than sorry, you don't want to be at the ticket counter and find out you can't depart because of a piece of paper. Happy travels! J

It's the same as flying to Hawaii... No customs and no passports.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory, same as Hawaii.

(I know, I know, most people insist that Hawaii is a state, but I have it on good authority that they didn't fill out all the required paperwork. It's been swept under a rug, but there are those of us who know the truth and we REFUSE to be silenced.)

still I suggest if you have a passport, take it, TSA seems to fluxuate from airport to airport and border to border.

god, 2 years ago I was held up (domestic) trying to get a deer skull as carry-on (no it was not fresh and in fact quite clean - just the bone, found, old)

hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Richard, sorry to hear that you were unfairly targeted. It's kind of hit or miss because some security people are wildly inconsistent. So far (knock on wood) I haven't had any problem carrying skulls aboard.

I expected scrutiny, but pulling a manager over to determine its harmlessness was odd. They discussed the idea it may have been explosive - but I think they were just amused.

it was sort of a once-off occasion...

How many times will any of us find such a thing on a 7 AM walk in the Ozarks?

back on topic! take as much documentation as you can! and e-ticket wherever possible!

if you got it, use it.

Richard, I wish I was there to observe the whole scenario! I bet it was quite entertaining. I would have leaped to your defense.

Speaking of skull stories...

Some years back I was visiting my brother who was living/working in Paris at the time. I brought with me two small stuffed teddy bears, who were my stateside nieces' "Air Bears". My nieces were creating a photo album of the bears in famous and/or exotic locales around the world. Paris fit the bill, of course.

My brother lived half a block from the catacombs, so we naturally decided to take photos of the bears while in the catacombs. (Yeah, I know, we're talking about young girls involved here, but what can I say... My brother and I got carried away.)

We carried the bears in a large sack. We came to a large pile of skulls, took out the bears and placed them on top of the pile as if they were two of the skulls, and then took photos.

When we were done, we put the stuffed bears back in the sack. Immediately two security guards came running down and grabbed the bag from us. They were French, naturally, and as arrogant and pompous as you would expect in such a situation.

They glared at us while reaching into the sack, having caught us redhanded.

If you only could have seen their faces when they pulled out two teddy bears. The look of combined shock, disappointment and disdain was absolutely priceless. We just smiled sweetly at them and didn't even try to explain.

They're probably to this day trying to figure out what two grown American men were doing with teddy bears in the catacombs.

I hear the keepers of the catacombs are quite guarded. were you able to prove the bears weren't original to the site? it's not unreasonable to consider that Parisiens of that era may have had stuffed animals. although I would expect true pelts and not plushies.

next time just boost the toy and ship it around the world to friends for photos, people have done it in the past and in the end, makes the sad stuffed doll/animal that much more fun.

Richard, shipping the bears around the world is exactly what my sister's family did. That's how the bears got to me. They also included a journal so that everyone can create entries "written by the bears". My brother and I wrote some hilarious ones. Wish I could remember what they were.

Teddy & Freddy Trip Journal-day 9

Had a wonderful lunch (much more than we could eat) at an exotic underground restaurant called the Cat's Combs. There weren't any cats though...maybe one of those translation things? Make note to research on arrival home.

LOL, MJ.

Here's an entry I do remember....

We put saran wrap over the toilet seat so that we could perch one of the bears on it, and we took a photo.

The journal entry was "Uncle Jim is nice but his cooking is too spicy!"

LOL, Richard. It sure is off topic, but the passport issue was completely handled in the very first response. The rest has been an awful lot of fun. And a lot better than the endless "Can you recommend a place to stay that is [insert various criteria here]" or "How do I get to Culebra" or "Can I bring a llama on the ferry", etc.

Jeannie G3 has the patience of a saint, as do Debbie and many other posters. I hereby nominate them for Culebra sainthood.

Come to think of it, the board in general has incredible patience with you and me. So I nominate everyone else on the board for sainthood, too. Guess that just leaves us, Richard.

My sainthood is well deserved - you have no idea how often I compose a smartalec response and then decide to be nice, or to not respond at all. :)

Happy Diving!

Richard, I would vote to phrase that in the exact opposite way: It's simple to be nice, but not easy. Can you enlighten me on what you mean? I could use some advice along that line. I tend to be kind of like Debbie described but lacking her self control!

I defer, you're phrasing is generally the correct one.
