Toooooo Funny!
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Chris of Florida (---.proxy.aol.com)

Hello Posters of IslaCulebra.com.....what an awesome "local" website....kudos!! Though, what is "local" on the great web internets anyway?? Some chica from Siberia might be posting as "Island Cutie" or some other seductive pseudonym. But then again, with your personal, unique [(and most appreciated) COLORFUL] insights - it is certainly apparent that ya'll knowith whatith you speakith! Who needs an official (official meaning - "you can't do this you can't do that") tourism board, when you've got a respectful (though seemingly irreverant - which is a GROOVY thing:) small clan of hosts kindly and nicely laying out what to expect from Culebra. And kindly and nicely framing how eagers tourists shouldn't "rock the boat" too much and leave Culebra the way they luckily found it. VERY COOL!

Aside from the plethora of up-to-date info (old, usless info blows....just read a Fodors travel guide:), your banter is freakin' pretty funny and I catch myself sniggling outloud. Keep up the good work...though can you really call it "work" when you're simply forwarding first hand, actually earned knowledge (by imbibing at the local pubs after stepping of your dinghy and then later toeing the white sands...c'mon - be fair:).

I am fortunate enough to have parents that bought a house in Maunabo (SE Corner) in PR. It's in the mountains (gorgeous) and just a short trip to the beach, which is our heaven away from Florida. But I certainly can't complain about the beaches here on the West Coast of Florida (Siesta Key, Honeymoon Island, etc.)...some of the world's best. It's simply the utter "relaxability" of certain parts of PR that reigns supreme. This summer, we (me and the wifey) plan to come to PR for a whole month and we certainly plan to spend some righteous time in Culebra, of which we have not yet experienced. From what "the clan" alludes to, Culebra is our cup of tea...or better yet our Corona....woops I mean our Medalla (still w/ a lime, though!) Lookin' forward to reading your posts here and there and, hopefully (as one could only hope to aspire) achieve in the near future the personal, unique and colorful knowledge of your Paradise in the Sun! And even more hopefully we get to experience the ubiquity of your "Culebra Ease"....that MJ, Richard, Mort, Frank, Doug and Michael seem to bleed. Hope to clang cans with some of you sooner than later!

PAZ!

Chris

"what is "local" on the great web internets anyway??" - C in F

very timely and on topic as lately it is widely understood the Island Woman cart is in fact a shashlik stand in either Tblisi or perhaps Tashkent, but opinions seem to vary.

- I hear best asked for twice cooked...

Ohio, actually, and the shashlik is pre-formed, sort of like a *home fry* from Burger King. We do bring her out for the dog and pony show on occasion, but like Lassie, the MJ you meet may not quite be the same one someone else meets Who cares? Soon, an Island Woman cart in every mall!!
(Chris, come on by, *MJ* is always happy to meet folks from Florida which is where she grew up...at least, one of them grew up there).

The real shasklik goes like this: (from Wikipedia) and the real deal is much closer to Pincho Joe's pincho's...(oh, that IS some news. Joe is taking his pinchos back over, hooray! Check them out next to the panaderia, on the weekends. Mouth joy on a skewer, and whole rotisseried pollos, yum)

Shashlik or shashlyk (Russian: Шашлык, from Crimean Tatar Şışlıq[1][2]) is a form of skewered dish popular throughout the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. Shashlik is generally either beef, pork, or lamb, depending on local preferences or religious observances. These skewers of meat are either all meat, all fat, or alternating pieces of meat and fat. Meat for Shashlik (as opposed to other forms of Shish kebab) are usually marinated overnight in a high-acidity marinade like vinegar, dry wine or sour fruit/vegetable juice with the addition of herbs and spices. While it is not unusual to see shashlik listed on the menu of restaurants, it is more commonly sold by street vendors who roast the skewers over wood, charcoal, or coal. Shashlik is usually cooked on a grill called a mangal. It aso has become part of Israeli fastfood being brought over by Jews of Mongolia, and Russia. The name in Hebrew is Shishlyk. Not that much of a difference. It is also prepared the same way, and usually has very strong tasting and spicy miranades.

Chris,

Try to loosen up and enjoy yourself! 8-P

OK. You're hired as part of the writer's cramp relief brigade. We'll expect five 250 word posts per week. Cleverness trumps relevance, as I'm sure you've deduced...

Doug,

ACK! re: cleverness! I thought we were just silly dumb (which was the worst thing my son could think of to call his sister without getting in trouble when he was about three...I like it).

Chris --

"And even more hopefully we get to experience the ubiquity of your "Culebra Ease"....that MJ, Richard, Mort, Frank, Doug and Michael seem to bleed."

In the immortal words of ONE of the Marx brothers (never can recall which one) "I will belong to no club that would have ME as a member." Please don't insult these other fine people by including me in that esteemed lineup. I am not worthy ...

"Hope to clang cans with some of you sooner than later!"

Tell us when you'll be there and THAT can be a reality. Clanging cans is my specialty.

Frank :-)

Groucho said it. Insults be damned! You make me laugh, that's good enough for me (of course, I live here, so it doesn't take much to entertain me, god knows). However, I don't clank cans, so I too am unworthy. Does clinking count?

no, but clunking does...

and is entirely under-rated.

yeah that was Groucho and count me out. (I always identified with Zeppo anyway)

Chris, don't! You'll only encourage us!

Seriously, nice post. I enjoyed it.

And Frank, I don't think I would be in any club in which you AREN'T a member! Since that limits my options severely, you'll be pleased to know that I've joined the 4H Club (I'm getting more and more comfortable --- my sheep phobia is almost gone). Truth be told, I don't actually know if you are (or were) a member of 4H, but I felt it was time to face my fears.

But I know for sure that we are solidly in the Culebra club together. I guess that will have to suffice for now, unless you reveal some additional options.
