Hospital or Clinic on Culebra?

Author: Jody (---.bstnma.east.verizon.net) Date:   04-02-08 11:39 Hi, My husband and I are coming to Culebra next week (so excited!) for a 4 night stay. We are about to have our second child and this is a much-needed vacation and adventure for us. Looking forward to lots of downtime, snorkeling, reading on the beach, and exploring. Since I am 6.5 months pregnant I need to have a contingency plan in case there are any unexpected (though unlikely) emergencies like premature labor. I wonder if residents or regular visitors can help me figure this out. Are there medical facilities on the island, and where are they located? What would a person do in case of a medical emergency? Also, on a completely different note, I have heard from a friend that there is a bioluminescent cove on the eastern side of the island, but I haven't found any information about it here or elsewhere. Is this true? Thanks - Jody

Author: JP (208.35.58.---) Date:   04-02-08 13:37 Hello I am a resident at Culebra. To treat a really bad emergency they send you by plane to the main land to Fajardo know matter what time it is. I have had three babys one at 1:00am took the plane another at 4:30am and the last at 2:30am. Once the plane have take off from culebra there ia an ambulance waiting for you... We have here in culebra a hosiptal with medicen that they will help you here first and if it is really bad they will take you to the main land. I hope this help you to have and idea but i had a good treatment for me and for my babys so come the enjoy your stay... Bye

I think she had the baby at home with help from a midwife. No worries, that seems to be the "in thing" now in PR, give birth at home. I have talked to the locals in Culebra about this (emergency medical treatment) because it was our concern as well, not for us but for their well being. They seem to have a plan under control and it doesn't seem to be a mayor problem flying anyone to the mainland for treatment, even if it is in the middle of the night. Happy travels! J supergarcia3

Home birth is just fine with me, and I would be less concerned, actually, if I were further along in the pregnancy, but if something did happen this early it would definitely require a hospital for the baby. I was hoping to hear how women on the island have had their babies, so thank you for sharing these stories. I am not really too worried that anything will happen, but it's good to have the number and an idea of the way things work just to be prepared! Now we can just enjoy our trip... Jody
