Lorraine, just go to Dinghy Dock or Mamacita's around happy hour time (if you don't drink alcohol, doesn't matter, just hang out awhile). There are quite a few folks around here your (our) age - and age doesn't matter much here anyway. Just introduce yourself (even if it's just to the bartender...we have GREAT bartenders here - in fact they were some of the first people I met here) and see what happens next. You're safe, no worries.
Also, there are ways to get involved, which is another way to meet people. Both the local school(s) and Abbie's school (just ask, anyone can tell you how to get there, including me) are always looking for volunteers, also at the library they need people (go past the fire station, it's the trailer behind the fence - if the fence is shut, so is the library), another good way to meet people. I don't know if you speak Spanish...if so great, if not, it doesn't matter, and it will be a big help if you want to learn.
My advice is always...take it slow, get to know the place, take a lot of walks, say hello to everyone you see (buenos dias, buenos tarde, buenos noches) with a smile...it works.
