Rough Weather

Hola! There will be very rough weather for the next few days, Wednesday and Thursday. The Meteorologists from Puerto Rico are urging everyone on the North, East (of the island)and this includes Culebra and Vieques to be very careful on the beach. There will be hurricane like waves and these can be extremely strong and bring along very strong underwater currents. Everybody PLEASE be careful when out in the water. Also, check the ferry schedules to make sure if the ferry is operating for certain times and days, one of the ferries to Vieques was canceled this evening. Happy travels! J

Thanks for posting this. With Semana Santa being the week of beach camping, it is seriously important that locals and tourists pay attention to these warnings.

If anybody knows ferry news - please post it!

Visitors are starting to inquire what to do if ferries do not run. Since this week is one of the major income weeks for a lot of folks on the island, 'tis no light matter ..

I have a couple of numbers for the Autoridad de Puertos in Fajardo, they are the "Port Authority" that handle the ferries leaving Fajardo. Good luck trying to get them to pick up the phone. The numbers are 787-860-8618, 787-863-0705, 787-863-0852. Call ahead if you can to make sure the ferry you are planning on boarding is still available. Just because you have a ticket that doesn't mean you are assured a spot on the ferry or it's going to depart for that matter. You can also call the pier in Culebra or visit them ( if you are already on the island) if someone from their crew is there, their phone # is 787-801-0250. Above all have patience, this is one of their busiest times of the year. What to do if ferries don't run, you're just stuck at what ever pier you're at, Fajardo or Culebra. If you have a flight out of PR, I'd check and double check about the ferries and maybe leave a day early if there is inclement weather. According to the forecast, this rough weather is due to last until Thursday, including that day. I'll keep you posted and you can also check with the locals, also wapa.tv for the latest in weather. Does anyone know when this weather is projected to subside??

Do you think the ferries will be open by Tuesday??

Forecast say showers everyday till we depart PR on 3/27, will it be gloomy most of the time?

The rough weather at sea will start to subside today Friday, March 21 in the afternoon. Since it is Good Friday, there was no newscast this morning, so I was not able to find out if ferries are operating today. Anyone on Culebra found out about ferries?? The sea will continue to be a bit rough to a lesser degree for the rest of the weekend, 4-6 feet waves, so continue to take precautions. The forecast seems stable for the next couple of days, in fact there is no rain, just some clouds but, pleasant weather. Remember, if there are scattered showers, it usually doesn't last very long due to the never ending trade winds that blow them away. Forecast until Tuesday, March 25 says some clouds, temperatures 83-84 and very pleasant. Keep checking the forecast, I will too. Enjoy your trip! Happy travels! J
