Turtle-watching
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I found the following in the calendar of events at http://www.gotopuertorico.com/ :

Turtle-watching season - Culebra. During the turtle season you can arrange with private tour operators to observe the turtles as they come ashore to lay eggs. 787-742-1033, 787-510-0019CL, 787-742-1045FX.

Is it really possible that someone does this kind of tours? I called the first number, got voice mail, left a message. Still waiting. At the second number the lady told me to call the third number. The third number was a fax.

Can anyone have any idea about who might own these numbers or who may be offering this kind of tours?

I know about the P.R. Natural Resources volunteer opportunity, and I'd love to help instead of having a tour, but I don't feel like bothering about looking for a shelter for the rest of the night (we'll stay in Puerto Rico), and I thought that may be with a tour it's easier to solve this problem...

Do you mean that it's impossible to see those turtles, and someowne is simply kidding about private tour operators?

Richard doesn't know what he means...he was joking. There are people who will take you to see turtles. When you get here, ask at Excetera. Someone will tell you what is going on.

I rarely do...

but the nesting happens at night, right? and outside of a charter, wouldn't it be more fun to just pull an all-nighter? sorta like the running of the grunnion in SoCal?

Thanks a lot for your advice, MJ!

Did you mean that it's possible to see turtles in day time? I read (just like Richard is saying) that they come out to lay eggs at night. If this is the case, what can be seen during the day?

Also, is Excetera just a place where those people who can take us to see turtles meet? Or are they (Excetera) organizing it? I found their phone number, and I am wondering whether I should call them... (We’ll have just a day on the island, and I prefer to avoid wasting time.)
Also, should we look for people with boats, or is it a car trip? It looks like Flamenco beach is closer than the ferry dock to the two beaches where turtles nest. Is there any reason why we should look for people near the dock rather than at the beach?

BTW, I have just called (877)-77-CORAL (Coralations?) and they said that they will have the turtle program this year, but it starts only in April, and we'll be in Puerto Rico during the last week of March.

Excetera is a store with internet, phones, office and misc stuff. They don't really have anything official to do with any of the turtle watching programs but they do have information :)
I was going to write this whole thing about nature and magic and timing and one day only...but never mind. Richard is right ;) Sometimes turtles lay during the day but it's far from the norm.

Thanks, MJ. I see your point about nature and magic. The problem is that I learned about Culebra after I booked the trip to PR, including the (non-refundable) hotel. I'll use this one day to have a look at the island to think about magic in the future (I really hope to have one:).

If I could find anyone who could show us turtles at night, and if it was possible to find a reasonably priced shelter for one night, we would stay on the island for one night. However, planning such stay needs having that someone who could show the turtles, and I could not find anyone so far: even Coralations are not doing it in March. Now I think that may be it's too early, and the chance to see them at the end of March is low...

occasionally they nest on Flamenco, but it's certainly not the prime. it would be sad indeed if the 2 small staked-out protected nests were all there were the one time I noticed...
