be sure to tell him you want a beater, 'cause he does have some nicer rolling stock too.

I agree, Jerrys is much better than Carlos Jeep. To have a nice time, avoid Carlos Jeep.

Any rental but Carlos Jeep

DePrez - What's with the pulling up old threads on car rentals just for the purpose of trashing Carlos Jeep?

One of the owners of Mamacita's once told me to please leave all the bad stuff about Mamacita's in the forum since,

'there's no such thing as bad PR'

with that in mind ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael, that's interesting!

With your permission, I would like to quote you if Owlihoot threatens me for accidentally revealing her age on the board last week.

Mort, dont worry about Owlihoot. Having met her last week at the campground I can attest she probably won't do you too much harm.

Maybe ;)

Herb, I want to thank you for taking me off the hook with Owlihoot... Your "beater" post immediately following mine above makes my accidental age-reporting post look positively wonderful in comparison.

Don't know Carlos, but...Jerry is great! Last time I was on the island I had trouble getting the tank filled...one station ran out the other was closed...Jerry said no problem and just charged me for the gas but no "penalties or extra for having to do it himself".

Just talked with someone at Jerry's (I assume Jerry)...it sounds like there isn't much need for a vehicle that can go off the paved roads because most public roads are paved to areas that most visitors want to go. Does this sound pretty accurate? My wife and I will be in town for a week and we plan on diving for 2 or 3 days, spending a couple of days at the common places like Flamenco where you can easily get by publico/taxi, but were thinking we may want a vehicle for a couple of days as well to get around the island to some of the more remote areas. I don't really know where exactly that would be yet, but is it pretty safe to assume I can get there on pavement? Thanks for your help.

By the time I finish planning my trip and visiting the island I think I'm going to owe everyone on the forum a beer at some local restaurant I'll ask you to suggest.

The last few hundred yards of the road to Punta Soldado and the last 100 feet to Playa Zoni are dirt roads with ruts. No 4WD needed but high clearance that the small SUV affords is helpful. Other passenger vehicles should proceed v-e-r-y slowly and with major attention paid to keeping the tires on the high spots so the transmission and floorpan don't get scraped or punctured. Also, be careful of acacia bushes overgrowing all road edges. The thorns are like sharp steel nails and WILL cause flats. Jerry will show you what they look like.

yup, if a road doesn't go all the way, you just need to hike the rest. the paved will get you almost there, but off-roading is a really bad idea on many levels.

those Acacia thorns are nasty, they look like what we always called Locust trees here in the states.

WE were just at Playa Zoni and you can now drive right down on a nice paved road to a dirt parking lot. Very nice. Soldado...some do drive but we hike. Big ruts and big thorns. Not worth the flat tire.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.
