Pictures from our Culebra Trip
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We were in Vieques last week with a day trip to Culebra. We had a great time in spite of me being really sick with a virus.

We had a really nice lunch at a Mexican place in front of the ferry.

rented a golf cart which we called our Jeepita because of the way I was feeling I wasn't comfortable with the scooter which we had reserved. the woman that helped us with the Scooter was so nice, even when we decided not to take it. My husband had forgotten closed toe shoes so she went and found a pair he could borrow. She gave him a little lesson on how to ride it and everything. When we realized I wasn't comfortable she just turned us over to Carlos Jeep.

We putted around and checked out the island and then spent many happy hours at Flamenco.

The woman selling food and smoothies in the parking lot at Flamenco had great food.

Anyway here's the link to all of our pics, there's an album for Culebra if you want to see it

Hard to get a bad one on Culebra, eh? Mort I'm jealous. In 13 years I've never seen a tree boa - awesome pic. Also, how cool to sail around the places we love. Good show!

Thanks, Doug and Ali! We sure did have a great time.

It was really cool to sail around the small islands. The owner of the boat (a good friend) has been coming to Culebra for a few years (it's one of his favorite islands in the Caribbean) and he was always curious about the small islands on the west side, so we toured them.

The photo that shows the huge rocks we were climbing on is from that island west of Culebra that is shaped kind of like a saddle (sort of convex) with the two small boxlike cement structures on each end (on the "peaks"). We pulled into a cove that probably never sees a boat or a person. My friend told me that a catamaran can safely anchor there but a single hull would be too risky.

We didn't climb up over the cliff. We just stayed on the rocks. A local told me a couple days later that the island was used for hazardous dumping by the military. I don't know if that's true or not, but I was glad we didn't hike all over it!

Sailing is definitely wonderful, but it's incredibly expensive to own a boat, especially a catamaran. Just before we arrived, the mainsail had been ripped in a storm. Cost: tens of thousands. His new wind generator had also just broken. And while we were on the boat, an impeller failed. Just about every day some new problem comes up. I could never afford it... either the money or the time! But I'm sure grafeful that my friend can!

I have a boat owning friend who insists that BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand...

Mort,
We saw your sand sculptures and they were wonderful. How creative.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

Enjoy Culebra!

Tricia, those weren't our sculptures, sadly. They were done by a cute local (PR) girl.

The sculptures stayed for quite a few days before they degraded. It's funny... The guy with the tractor who smooths/rakes the beach every few days always just runs over all the sand castles (etc) that people build on the beach... which is a lot, especially on weekends.

But he carefully worked around the ones that were in my photo. He just couldn't bear to destroy art!

Michael,

When I was there over New Years, one of the kids I've gotten to know over the years (actually, a young man, now) sailed by the Dinghy Dock in what someone told me was formerly your boat. Are you down to one, now?

Doug

Hi Gina

We stayed at the Gallery Inn. It was pretty and quirky.
