Camping and Safety
Culebra, Puerto Rico

is it safe for a woman in her early thirties to camp alone on culebra, or do I need to worry about harrassment? I am from NYC, so I'm pretty seasoned, but don't want to spend my holiday having to either fend off intrusive men or worrying for my safety. I do not have enough money to rent a room but would very much like to stay on the island for a week. If it is unsafe, does anyone have suggestions as to some secret, cheap accomodations? I would be visiting in mid-may. thanks.

ANI,

IN CULEBRA NOTHING HAPPENS. HERE IS VERY SAFE TO BE BY YOURSELF. BUT IF YOU WANT YOU CAN STAY AT HOTEL PUERTO RICO WHICH IS CHEAP OR EITHER HOTEL KOKOMO. ALSO THERE IS A GUY AT FLAMENCO BEACH THAT RENTS EVERYTHING CONCERNING TO CAMPING.

ENJOY,
MITCHELLE

Hi,

How was your experience? I'm also planning to camp at Flamenco Beach as a woman alone. Did you have any hassles with men or mosquitos? any other advice would be appreciated...like the where the best sites are (secluded, near tree/s). Thank you in advance. Anyone else out there with advice on these topics, your input is most welcome!

A young woman recently new to the island stayed at Flamenco for quite awhile and loved it. I stayed there myself when first arriving (of course, I'm not real young!). But savvy is savvy. I think you can feel quite safe...but for any men who might want to get friendlier than you wish, treat them like mosquitos...a verbal, smiling, polite swat is enough to get the message across!

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your humor...about those mosquitos though, are they numerous in the campground?

Do take OFF or any other repellent. There are both mosquitos and "no see ums" or whatever those tiny nats are called. We got bit at Flamenco and on the trek to Carlos Rosario beach. Happy Travels! J

Owlihoot is there right now. She is**and staying there alone for a couple weeks, which she does each year. She would be answering your question if she were online right now, and assuring you it's safe.

A few weeks ago, I met a woman in her 60's who had been there for 30 days. She was a tough old bird, though, with the language of a sailor (or worse). She told me that "No one better f*** with me, or they'll get a hammer first in the foot and then in the face". So, I think you have to worry more about her than about any men! LOL.

Even in the LEAST crowded times in Flamenco, there are always a lot of people around. It's incredibly safe.

No see'ums really are a concern for some people. I was one.

They are a problem at dusk mainly. Bring long pants, Off and a citronella candle. They have the latter two at the grocery stores.

I'm sure Owlihoot will appreciate you putting her age out there for the world to see!

Happy Diving!

Hey Mort....I didnt see Owlihoot age, so I dont think you have anything to worry about ;)

I was at the camp with Owlihoot for a week (just got back) and we had no bugs at all. Two bottles of DEET was wasted space. We never cracked the seal on the bottle. On the other hand, take as much sunscreen as you can without raising the brow of the TSA.

FYI, we were in the last spot possible in camp area E for a week.

Wow, Herb, that's great about the bugs!

I wish we could say the same. My wife and I both had lots of bites on our legs one night, and we were there only a could weeks before you. Strange!

But we learned our lesson... Long pants at dusk.

About Owlihoot's age, that was clearly a typo on my part and I surely got it backwards. I should have typed "46"! Or less!

Yes, E is the prettiest and most remote. The front office tries to save that for mainland Americans mostly, and tries to put families in D, and the locals (meaning from the PR main island) in A, B, and C.

Definitely there are less people in E because it's a long walk away from the entrance area, and it's a LONG way to lug your stuff. But it's worth it.

E is quieter on the whole, but you'll still have noise incidents, especially on weekends or holidays. But midweek it is usually fantastic.

Which do you prefer? Remoteness or convenience?

My family thought they wanted convenience, but when I brought them to E, they were sold. We got used to the walk really quickly. We even got so that we enjoyed it a lot. We usually walked on the beach rather than the road... It's just as fast.

There are bathrooms in every section. There are showers at the entrance and at E, but the E showers are disabled. Sooner or later they'll be fixed. I was actually happy that they were broken because it helped make E less crowded.
