Has anyone rented a VW Thing from Dick and Cathie? What was your experience? Is it a 4WD. We are staying at Casa del Sol and have been told if it has been raining, we will need a 4WD to get up there. TIA

don't have the details personally, but a friend swears by them - it was rainy their first trip, so they didn't have much to do except drive all over the place with apparently no problems (pre-Zoni road re-pave).

Just got back and I rented a "thing" from Dick. They are rusted beaters and I would rent from him again in a heart beat. Mine (the orange one) started every time and would take any road I took it on (I did not get crazy). For 40 bucks and to not worry about scratching it.....absolutely worry free

Thanks Herb. Did you have to pay extra insurance and what rate did you get?

Insurance? Whats that? Just kidding. Dick and I never discussed insurance and he never asked for my All State Card or my drivers lic. Really, theres not much left to hurt on these things, he repairs the rusted out places with quarter inch plate steel. They really are worry free. Call him, hes really personable and will work with you.

We had the same orange thing when we were there and actually had an issue with one of the a-arms but Dick took out the air tools and had us on our way no problem with no hassle. Dick is a great guy that was super nice. I would highly recommend dealing with him. It can be a little tough to get the thing into the tougher roads and what I might do next time is take one day with a jeep to hit those kind of spots that it couldnt make. If it were mine I might have risked it but I didnt feel comfortable 4 wheeling with someone elses stuff. Watch the hills too...can be a little sketchy.
