Small places to eat
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Herb (---.dsl.stlsmo.swbell.net)

We have all heard of Mamacitas, Juanita Bananas and Dakity Dock as prime places to eat (that is how I kind of read this board). BUT, what are some of the smaller, quaint and quieter places to eat dinner at that often get passed over?

Come on now, give up your secrets...you know what I'm talking about...thats right.....now, don"t you feel better?

Thanks
Herb

Shhhhhhh. Joy of discovery is a good thing and what travel to a place like Culebra (which isn't really very big, and fairly easy to navigate for the curious) should be about. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'll toss out a hint. Check out the "criolo" section of this website and brush up on your Españolish.

and the Çriolo section can be found where?

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

Herb, if you stay on the main road (from the docks toward the airport) you will find two great places to eat, super inexpensive. We ate at El Batey, it is next to the baseball park. It has an outdoor and inside area to eat, and a bar. Don't be intimidated that it's a bar setting; we sat right at the bar with our 14 year daughter and had the best grilled chicken, rice, beans and salad for $8. Gigantic tostones! They have a varied menu from burgers to good puertorrican style cooking. There is another small kiosk (pink colored) further down the road, the food is good but, she closes as soon as she runs out of food at about 4-5 PM. Good pina coladas, soups, rice dishes and other fried stuff. Juicy quenepas there when they're in season. The ladies with the kiosks at the entrance at Flamenco beach also have a good and inexpensive menu. Ask the locals for places to get good home style cooking they would pay for. Happy travels! J.

I think we may have been yanking your chain a bit Herb.

There are indeed some places that are trying to be smarter than your average fare, but there are also plenty of (ok, enough of) mom and pop joints and with a few exceptions they're hard to miss. It's not really the variety, but the hours of operation.

Anyway, except for a drunk winter night in Chicago (and I guess even that has its Tom Waits-y charm) stumbling across them is part of the fun IMHO.

sorry if I wasn't clear - by stumbling I meant across good food anywhere in PR vs. things on the sidewalk in Chicago (and I love Chicago).

and when I refer to Mom and Pop - that's high praise.

Gosh, it's a good thing stumbling didn't mean what a few of us have been known to do just navigating the sidewalks here, looking for things like our friends and cars ;)

Herb, you know all the secrets now! I expect a full belly and a report!

Richard, its all good and fun. I pull plenty of chains as often as possible, so I have to be willing to have mine pulled once in a while. That having been said....lets have some more fun.

Herb,

Let me recommend the pork chop at El Caobo. I think they have two different ones, so get the one with the rib bone in. Beans and rice on the side, and try the house hot sauce. Enough food for two.

Bon appitite!

Now here's my question: Has anyone tried the fried chicken at the place next to the Colmada Isla del Sol? How was it and are they interested in buying freshly killed roosters? ;-p

When I was a kid, my dad was in the Air Force in PR and I remember the amazing beans and rice we would buy at the corner bar....fantastic.

Thanks Doug

don't be silly, you can't fry roosters.

- if anything you stew 'em.

or catch them young, castrate, fatten up and sell them as capons.

jeez Herb, start a new thread or something and post about your exp. I think someone did start a reminiscence thread a while back you could add to.

yeah, that's right, I ended with a preposition.

Where and when (if that's not too personal) in PR was your family stationed - just out of curiosity 'cause I'd like to check out other parts, but never have outside of C & SJ and I feel somewhat guilty, I haven't given limited time and $$ but that's another story.

Richard you should try La Parguera. It's a fishing village turned tourist haven in the town of Lajas in the southwest corner of the island. No beach there but you can rent a small boat to navigate the miles of mangrove "tunnels" and the small mangrove islands offshore with crystal clear waters. This is also the site of the original Phosphorecent Bay. Now I understand it is Vieques' Bioluminescent Bay that is the brightest. La Parguera's has lost some of its luster. I understand there is another one somewhere in Fajardo.
