Rental Car OK on Culebra Roads?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello All,

I will have a rent-a-car for a week from San Juan. I will either have to leave it in Fajardo for the 4 days I am on Culebra or bring it to the island on the transport ferry. Do you know

How much it cost to have a car + 3 people on the ferry?

Also, I will probably have a Ford Focus, will it be fine on the roads of Culebra?
What is the road quality like?

And if all this works out, where can I park it?

Thanks for all your help, can't wait to be there

-Andrew

the roads and parking aren't the issues, it's that most rental insurance forbids ferries.

The last time we took a small foreign car over on the ferry from San Juan, we bottomed out on the road going up to the helicopter pad. I thought we'd destroyed the car, but it just hit a black-top boulder. If you don't pay attention on the road from the airport, you can end up with two wheels in the drain lane, and the bottom of a small car will hit the road there.

Since we live on a dirt road, we're used to the holes and such. We're renting a jeep this time because it's higher off of the ground!

There are some rough roads, if you're into exploring.

Anyone tried the Golf carts from Carlos Jeep rental? Would they make it to Zoni?

it would make an interesting experiment. I say go for it!

some of the hills are sort of steep (never driven a golf cart - no idea of capability) but except for acacias the pot hole dangers are mostly along the bay.

Yeah i've been told by friends who live on the island NOT to brign the rental car on the cargo ferry. A. they dont' typically allow it and B. it's most likely cheaper to rent once you get to Culebra. They suggested taking a publico from SJ (if you're flying in there) to Fajardo - about $80 and then just renting for the week (or by day or whatever) once you get to culebra. Besides, that means you can take the Passenger ferry instead of hte cargo ferry – nicer and more reliable with times so i've been told.

Generally the rental car companies prohibit folks taking hte rental car on the ferries for insurance reasons. Beyond that we generally don't recommend that our guests try to bring a car because first priority on the cargo ferries is given to commercial vehicles & then residents & a "bump" on either end could inconvenience travel plans.

The above post mentions a "publico" from San Juan, which I believe goes from Rio Piedras & costs about $7.00. They can take a bit longer as there are can be many stops. Most folks either rent a car & park it in the lot at Fajardo (right by the ferry) or take a taxi, which can run $70-100 (depending on the taxi) & takes about an hour to an hour & a half.
