Maritza's Guest House
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My wife and I just got back from Culebra after 4 days. Dec. 23-27, 2007 What can I say, Flamenco beach got to be the most beutiful place on earth. Definately, worth all the travels through planes and ferry to get there.
Now about our staying with Maritza. She has two rooms. We stayed at her bigger room "papaya". The room was great, bedrooom with queen size bed, private bathroom and ktichen with microwave and fridge. Now, I know that because Culebra is an Island a few things come with it such as bugs and mosquitos. Be ready with your mosquito repellent. There are a lot of mosquitos and they will bite you. My wife and I got eaten even with repellent. Now, I'm not here to put Maritza's Guest House down, but the third night we saw and had to kill 6 roaches and I mean ROACHES inside the bath!! Not your usual half inch roach. They were at least 2-3 inches long and they fly! So we call Maritza and she came to spray RAID in the bath. Now, imagine having the smell of RAID as you are traying to sleep. We can handle the mosquitos and other flying bugs, but roaches that look like grasshoppers or crickets, well that's different. Now, if you don't mind this small issues, then this is your place to stay.

Needless to say, it was all worth it! I highly recommend CULEBRA!!

PEACE
Mr. Rico

They are often delicately called 'water bugs', and are part of the natural landscape. I can't imagine a trip to Culebra without seeing at least 3-10. They give me the creeps, but I've learned to accept their existence. Lizards and their droppings can be pests too, but at least they eat the roaches...;)

"Tropical cockroaches are often much bigger, and extinct cockroach relatives such as the Carboniferous Archimylacris and the Permian Apthoroblattina were several times as large as these. Cockroaches are generally considered pests; however, only about 30 species (less than 1%) infest urban habitats" - Wikipedia.org

Enjoy!

I guess maybe the degree of freak-out might depend on what part of the States you are from as well. We have the same roaches in Atlanta that there are in Culebra; it's just an everyday thing in both places (okay summer only in Atlanta). They give me the creeps too, but it's just something you learn to live with or exterminate against.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

My memory, for what it's worth, is that roachs are not disease vectors. So, they may be ugly but they won't make you sick.

Wow, I've been to Maritza's twice, and never saw anything on the floor bigger than a fly!

Only reason we aren't staying there this trip is because the last trip, we found a couple of fleas on our Chihuahua (who is pretty much bald), and he freaks out if a flea gets on him.

Other than that, she has the guest houses, and she's a real nice lady! You have plenty of privacy at her place!

Mr. Rico,

when you told Maritza, what did you expect her to do? I think she was trying to take care of your problem, which, as you might see by previous posts, is not really a problem, but 'natural' in Culebra and the tropics in general. A lot of people would have just told you, well that's the way it is down here - no?

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Too bad about the roaches Mr. & Mrs. Rico. You should have stayed at Casita Tropical. Everything there was as clean as a whistle! The environmental thing to do, as we puertorricans here in Atlanta do to those nasty creatures is chancleta power with them! Use your trustworthy chancleta or flip flop and crush them to eternity. Happy travels! J
