Help us eat!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,
My husband 2yo son and I will be traveling to Culebra in January (CAN'T WAIT!) and I need some food advice. We'll be staying at the Culebra Beach Villas on Flamenco Beach so we'll have a little kitchenette. Ok so here are the questions.
1. I think we're planning to eat breakfasts, lunches and snacks in our room and then head into town for dinners...so we were thinking of taking public transportation to do that and not rent a car...is that doable? Is there public transportation that will run from Flamenco beach to town and back around dinner time?
2. I've read that groceries can be a bit pricey on the island..is it recommended that we bring some food with us or pick some up before getting on the ferry? Any grocery stores near the ferry?
3. Are there any food spots near Flamenco Beach (walking distance with a 2 yo)?
4. Any restaurant musts? (my 2yo is a very adventurous eater so kid friendly food isn't a concern)

Thanks so much and I would totally love to hear any other suggestions for a first time trip to Culebra.

Flamenco usually has food vendors which make many dishes close to the parking lot. They seem like they would be pretty good, at least the smell was inticing, but I cant speak from experience because we always made our lunch and brought it on the beach. Groceries are a bit expensive, but not ridiculous, so if bringing is an option that might be a good one. Flamenco is a good ways away from town so walking with a 2 yr old is prolly not an option. The publico seems to be a pain in the rear but again I cant say from experience but from what I've heard its unreliable. We rented a VW thing and it was nice to be able to come and go as you please. I know that Flamenco seems to be the main reason people come to Culebra but to be honest if you do not rent a car you are limiting yourself to just that area and there is PLENTY more to see if you venture around on your own. You could possibly rent it for a couple of days and not the whole time and check out the other beaches..definitely worth the little extra $$.

Thanks for all the info Ty. Really good to know that there are food vendors right by the beach. We had thought about renting a car for a few days, I think we'll play it by ear and see how we feel when we get there...our main objectives for this trip are: beach, eat and sleep so I don't think we'll be doing too much traveling around ...we do enough of that in our everyday lives :)
Thanks again!

We were just in Culebra for 2 nights with our daughters (7 and 4). The best food we had was the kabobs at Flamenco beach. My 4 y.o. liked the chicken so much that she asked for her own. That was a first! My husband had the swordfish and said it was very good. F.Y.I., the chicken is grilled and the fish is fried. We didn't try the pork - something for next time!
For dinners out, we ate at Mamacita's and Dinghy Dock. Both were good, neither was great. Eating out was expensive as well. For 3 adults and 2 kids (who share a kids meal), we spent at least $90, and only $20-25 of that was on drinks.
We all agreed that next time we will buy several kabobs before leaving Flamenco, take them back to the house, and eat them for dinner. At $2 - $3 per skewer, it'll definitely be cheaper!

Enjoy your trip. Culebra is absolutely beautiful! We can't wait to go back.

the best selections of groceries are a few blocks off the main road to Flamenco, you may want to consider (if you do get a jeep/Thing for part of your stay) to bring a few basics (things close early) and do it near the start to stock up the room rather than wandering around and trying to catch a publico (even the coolest 2 yo. gets cranky after all) and then give yourself an overview tour of the island while you're at it.

I don't think the publicos run after the last ferry w/o prior arrangements. although some have offered after hours "taxi" service, I've heard you can't really plan on being able to use them as such even on call.

B. Rosa's has reasonably priced comfort food for all ages. and again the burger at El Batey takes forever, but really darn good. there's also that criollo place across and north from the airport with a porch, bare bones but good honest food - arroz con pollo with beans (con frijoles? - my Spanish is horrendous) seemed to be the specialty. I def. recommend the pastellitos at the kioskos on the beach, esp. the pulpo.

anyone have input on Tina's these days? I heard she'd sold to relatives and haven't been able to check it out the last coupla times. it was really great and basic, served on a screened-in porch in the 'hood behind the school playground.

Colmado Milka is the one across from el Eden, right? if you're in there - keep looking around - the place is a rabbit warren of small rooms and it seems like I always find an alcove or room I didn't see before, they have more than meets the eye.

but each of the colmados has their own attraction.

with a kid (or picky adult companions) I would think the key is to remember you can't run out to a 7-11 or Safeway, so it's all about contingency planning.

mmmmm...kabobs and pastelitos, I may never have to leave the beach! Although it might be worth the $ to rent a jeep for arroz con pollo and awesome burgers!
Thanks guys for all the helpful tips, I definitely have a better feel for the food situation on the island. Looks like it may just make more sense to rent a jeep for at least a few days - is that easy to do once we get there or should we arrange a rental in advance?
Thanks,

jeep availibity depends on the date. I'd call ahead to get an idea. I have my own preferences, but they all seem to be good.

My wife and I enjoyed El Caobo located in the neighborhood behind the new school. It was recommended to us by people who regularly visit Culebra and I'm glad they turned us on to it. The people are friendly and seem to have a genuine interest in making sure you're happy. What more can you ask.

If you're looking for elegance or decor - forget about it. But if you want something fun, try El Caobo.

According to their sign [from Febraury] the phone numbers are 742-0505 &
409-0872 and they're open Monday to Saturday 4 to 10 PM

Bon Apetit

Actually it's official name was El Caobo even back when, under Tina - :)

Enjoy Culebra!

So we're back from Culebra and thank you to everyone for all of your suggestions on where and how to eat on Culebra. We LOVED the empenadas and kabobs at the food vendors at Flamenco Beach, it was perfect, easy, good and cheap. We had them for lunch every day. We rented a jeep just for one day and did grocery shopping, and explored the rest of the island. We cooked a few nights for ourselves and then tried Dingy Dock, Mamacitas and Barbara Rosas...all good. Next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time) we'll explore some of the other spots. We had such a great time I'm brimming over with wonderful things to say about Culebra (See my other post :)
Thanks again.
