Cash or ATM
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Matthew Lee (---.allregs.com)

We are coming to Culebra in a couple of days! Can't wait. I am wondering, will we need cash or do most places take credit cards. Is there an ATM in Culebra?

We are also bringing our 1 year old and will need diapers...does anyone know if there is a place to get diapers in Culebra?

THanks!

there is a pharmacy in town, and there are ATMS, and cards are accepted everywhere. the town is so small, you can walk everywhere, it is not going to take you long time to find diapers

There is no pharmacy per se (unless you meant the clinic, Julia?)....but diapers are available! Most people asking for a pharmacy want ibuprofen, sea sickness pills, fem hygiene products, sun block, etc. They are all available at the markets. Just remember, Sunday, Superette Mayra is closed, Milka closes between 12:30 and one and Genesis is open until around 6, also Isla Sol, near the airport is open on Sunday, someone told me. For medical stuff, you'd need to go to the clinic and find out what to do
The ATM's are at Excetera and the bank, either one about a five minute walk from anywhere in town, as Julia says.

Yep, Superette Mayra and Milka's both have most of that stuff! I was just clarifying because I've had visitors stop at the cart who have forgotten or had delayed luggage, wondering if there was a pharmacy where they could call in for some needed medication from home, and we don't have that.
Sitting at the cart, I get asked about every question about every situation that can happen while traveling, so I just try to keep it clear for anyone who doesn't know what we do or do not have (I send those people up to the clinic and never hear what happens next, so I guess it all works out). I also suggest - anything really important, carry with you in case of lost/delayed luggage. It sucks, but it happens.

Julia, I'd suggest you don't recommend or NOT recommend Culebra to anyone. It is not your place in the world, and that is fine! Culebra is not for everyone, and we are thankful for that. But it was pretty obvious you would not find us to your liking before you even got here. Too many worries about not perfect weather, not perfect available purchase. No judgement on you, everyone has their comfort mode. But please...we have beautiful visitors with babies in tow who love Culebra, because they *get it* in a way you didn't...and that's FINE!!! But your blanket statements...enough, dear Julia. Go to Club Med, or on a group tour next time and totally enjoy yourself...but I ask, do not denigrate Culebra because your standards are not what we offer.

Mort, and MJ, we've been to Culebra meny times before. It is usually a very quiet and nice place. But not during the Easter week, when the college kids come for spirng break, and it is full of drunk people out of control. Yes, we were very unfortunate, and bad things happened to us. It was our own fault, we should've avoided the Easter week.
I think I have the right to warn people who are planning to bring a baby, that they absolutely should avoid the easter week., or at least Flamenco beach during easter week.

MJ, please take out your insults from here. I explained to you in the email why I said what I said--after what happened to us, i think i have the right to warn people about it. I dont want to repeat it here, but i dont think i deserve harsh words. Even now, i still love Culebra, and i will be back, so please do not tell me that I do not get it.

Okay, everyone. I think we realize that different folks have different views on the subject of acceptable beach behavior.

Julia, I've known MJ for a long time, and she has never insulted anyone. She calls Culebra home and is very well qualified to advise people on making the most of their time there. Culebra works best if you let the rhythms of the tropics and the novel opportunities that arise each day guide you. For many people, letting go enough to do this is too nerve-wracking. Many other vacation destinations are better equipped to better serve folks in this category. MJ sensed this and offered it as a possible way for you to enjoy yourself more. I know her and she is doing it in the spirit of helpfulness.

Culebra is what it is, and that fact is part of its charm. Worrying about the details is not the way to enjoy such a laid back place. For many, a tropical rain on a porch roof, while sipping coffee or a cocktail underneath, is easily as beautiful as a blistering sunburn day on the beach. Likewise, Flamenco beach is not the only beach on Culebra. If the kids are too rowdy, head over to Zoni. Also, a realization that different people react differently to kids' rowdyness than we do is important when trying to be helpful on a forum. If none of this makes sense, then I'd say re-read MJ's posts for alternate suggestions, where you can control things better. I hope I get through to you - you'll love the island more when you go with its strengths, rather than fighting them. It's worth trying.

Doug

Dough, ok, that does it.

I was punched in the face by a drunk guy on Flamenco beach, ok? I dont know what different views you are talking about. Show one person who enjoys being punched in the face? Yes, we were stupid enough to camp at Flamenco beach, and yes, we came to Culebra to go to Flamenco beach, because we love it. And we planned to camp, because we dont have much money. The first night our tent was attacked in the middle of the night, and I got punched in the face. So we had to leave the campground and spend the night in the car, and rent a room the next day. And yes, we avoided Flamenco beach for the rest of the time.

Subject closed. I dont want you guys to think that i am some drama queen. It is just we went to Culebra to have a relaxing time, and i guess we were not lucky. And I think I have the right to be upset, after i woke up in the middle of the night because somebody was shaking our tent, screaming stuff in the language i dont understan, and when we tried to stop them, punched me. There were like 20 of them, and we were really scared for our life.

I agree that is very disturbing. I assume you reported this to the campground authorities and police.

In any case, this is the first time I have ever heard of this kind of behavior anywhere on Culebra. That person should be arrested and punished, but to generalize about all youngsters because of this is not fair or accurate. This was an isolated incident. I don't blame you for being upset. However the solution is to remove the bad apple, not condemn the whole barrel.

Doug

Yeah, the only person at campground was Jose ( i think thats his name), and he kept smiling when i was telling him about it all, he almost laughed, i promise...and everybody was acting like they did not speak english. Including the police. They did not speak a word of english, and we had no witnesses, we had to ask people to translate. and pretty much (through a translator), we were told that if we want to file a complaint with the police, we would have to be present for the hearing in Puerto Rico, if we are not in in Puerto Rico, we cannot do anything. and apparently they do not arrest people for punching a woman in the face--it is not grounds for arrest under Puerto Rican law...
Anyway, i dont even want to talk about it anymore, makes me too upset.
I dont generalize anyone, Doug, i am just saying that is not safe to camp during easter, thats it--dont forget, there were 20 or so guys, shaking our tent, not one person...when people are drunk, they dont control themselves, and there was really no police on the campground to regulate.

Cash or ATM. A little of both. Credit good also. ATM's get cleaned out on busy weekends, so prepare to have cash for Sunday on a "busy" weekend when this happens.
Uh, ya, way off subject here- but, Julia, it sounds like you had a bad time on Flamenco. And ya, I would not suggest camping with small childern during "holy week". Period. (College kids get crazy. I would not suggest camping with kids at Cancun either.)
MJ and Doug, your so right about certain people getting it and others not. Culebra has its ups and downs, this forum is a great place to inform on a lot of these topics. Glad we have it!
Rock on Culebra!

Banana, good point about ATM's on busy weekends, at least there's more than one now. there will be an insane line at the one by the plaza right after the ferry arrives, busy weekend or not. but they seem to re-stock it more often now.

It ran out on Saturday over Memorial day weekend once and I was scrounging on Monday (esp. after I left my smokes and book on the deck during a sudden rainstorm the night before) a lot of places didn't take plastic then either. thankfully they do now (many).

It is so sad to hear of anyone having an experience like Julia. I don't care how cool you are. The trouble is that sort of incident can ruin or even end camping on Flamenco for everyone, so I think it should be taken seriously.

We all agree that the violence Julia spoke of needs to be stopped. I am struggling with her account of the way the police handled it. Of course, never having seen any violence on the island, I have nothing to reference.

Doug, the problem was nobody spoke english--or at least they acted like they did not. Do you know if they really do not? There were like 10 people speaking spanish, and we did not understand a word of it, some random guy was translating for us, as good as he could. But we still do not know if they understood anything
and, again, it is not grounds for arrest in Puerto Rico-punching in the face is not. and the guy told police that my husband attacked him, thats why he punched me (at least that what the translator said). Anyway, we could not really do much, considering that we were going back to the US the next day and we did not speak the languagem did not have any witnesses
We learned the hard way that when you are travelling, you better learn how to protect yourself.

No no, -I think what happened to you is real, and that it's great your letting people know that Culebra is not always "paradise" (that's what people need to get) and ya, don't get beat up or robbed while your there cause the cops suck. I'm sick of people trying to shut up negative comments or experiences, because every place has its up and downs, and althougth your situation is far from typical... I'm sure it happened, and folks should be warned that camping during spring break with kids is not a good idea. With the cops, its a 'she said' - 'they said' , kinda deal, and without the language, I'm sure you guys were at a loss for words... I do know that the police department does have cops who speak fluently in english, I assume because you were leaving the island, you did not file charges, and the matter was left unresolved. Holy week at the campground is not a normal time, and tourists should know this, I'm glad your helping to get the word out so things like this don't happen again.
Rock on Culebra!
(I guess I shoulda put a BUT inbetween "others not" and "Culebra" in my other post...darn forums :)

banana, thank you for your support
And, trust me, when I say, that I sugarcoated the whole story--i am not going into details here. I've heard a lot of unpleasant things after the incident. And yes, the police is not helpful.

I dont what people to be discouraged from going to Culebra, and what happened was the result of lots of people from Puerto Rico main isnald being there. Usually, Culebra is a great place to go, quiet and peaceful, and I love it.
