Drive from San Juan to Culebra?

Author: Juan (155.48.108.---) Date:   01-19-04 19:56 Hi, my wife and I are planning to go to Culebra on March and we are thinking on renting a car in San Juan and then drive to culebra, taking the car on the ferry. Someone who has been there said that this might not be a good idea because some roads may not be good for a standard car (might need a 4x4). I would greatly appreciate to hear some thoughts about this. Our other option would be to fly to culebra and rent a car there. What are the prices of car rentals in Culebra? Thanks, Juan

The roads can be rough (after it's rained), so you may want to rent a jeep--all depends on how you think you can handle the dips in the roads. There were really only two places that the roads were rough. All other roads are blacktop and great for driving! If I remember, a jeep on the island ran about 50-$55 a day. Have fun! Kim

We have in mind to rent a car when we arrive in San Juan, but want to spend part of our vacation on Culebra. I was thinking of taking the car ferry from Fajardo, spend a few days on Culebra, then take the car ferry back. However, it would really mess up the vacation if we paid for our accomodations on Culebra and then found that we can't get over there, or get back. Does the car ferry run reliably? How long does it take to get on, load cars, offload cars in Culebra, etc.. Many thanks to anyone who can help out with some informaiton. Cheers, Eric Higgins

So it might not be a good idea to take a car. In fact, I dont know whether you can take a car as they are doing construction work on the ferry terminal. Call one of the hotels you are going to be staying in and ask them about whther car service is available right now.

The only thing is that we do not know how to get from our hotel in Condado to Culebra. I heard about a ferry in Farjardo but i'am not to sure. We do not want to spend a lot of money with a taxi. So, i was wondering if you could tell me the cheapest way to get to Culebra from Condado (Bus? Ferry?). Thanks A lot.
