Just a heads up... though I loved Culebra and had a fantastic time on our trip, it was a bummer to have been robbed (for the first time ever!) while we snorkeled off Tamarindo Beach. We had been on the island 4 days and had carried our wallet, cameras, cell phones, room key, etc with us everywhere and left our valuables in our bags hung in the trees or on our towels on the beach while we snorkeled. On this particular day, we'd decided to only take a little cash for lunch and the "carros publicos" ride, and stored it in two separate places in our backpacks. When we finished a glorious day of snorkeling, we hopped in the vans to return to the hotel, but when we went to pay the fare we discovered the $35 we'd carried had been stolen (but not the camera or cell phone!).
We'd heard another guest at our hotel talking about having lost her hand purse at Flamenco Beach and when it was returned, the $180 in cash that she had for her vacation was gone. Everything else was there. Cash is king everywhere I guess.
All this to say... no matter what paradise looks like, you still have to be vigilent.
Don't let this stop you from enjoying this beautiful place!
