There was the boating aspect, from coming upon and sailing with friends on a 30 ft. Maine wooden Pinky schooner to having my older child rendezvous with us on the island after sailing for 2 months as crew on a 70' S & S. When initially sailing into Gustavia, we saw a beef critter being butchered, hung beside the Cay; it's head floated in the water. My daughter and I could safely hitch rides, at times there was no one on the beach but us (all day long), the shopkeepers (few that there were) were friendly and helpful and fellow travelers gathered informally without drowning in booze ...to wander the island, to share stories on into the night, and to just relax. I worked/cooked for crew one week for the Barnes family on their inter-island freighter, going to Fajardo for fresh fruit and vegetables; it was heaven to have a kitchen as le Select rooms were rooms only with a slow fan. At night it was a bit noisy but no live music then as I remember.
Michael, tell us about the different cultural premise.
