Car Necessary?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi there

Have been reading the forums since I booked my trip and can't wait to get down there. My friend and I are visiting at the end of March staying at Culebra Island Villas. Do you think we'd need a jeep to get around during the day or does the publico stop nearby? If so, how often? Is it hard to get home after a late dinner and maybe some karoke? Any other tips considering our location much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ellen

strictly necessary - I guess not.

but if you can afford it...

ask yourself: do I want to slog into town to catch a publico out to Flamenco? (the only one with reg. daylight service runs from the ferry to there, if it's not full you can hail it if you're in between but that's rare) and if I miss the last one, am I willing to cadge a ride or carry the phone numbers (and wait and pay) for the few that will provide taxi service? and the same for staying out after dark in town.

some like that kind of uncertainty and I like a certain degree, but to me time is money and the time on the beach is value-added. If I want to hike I can think of other places w/o a beach that I won't be missing.

it's not un-doable. but unless you're good at making quick friends or are willing to spend almost as much on transport as a daily jeep rate, you won't see some of the other beaches.

If you are staying for more than 4 nights I would recommend renting a car. I have stayed at the Culebra Beach Villas on 2 seperate occasions and the publicos were very hesitant to make pick-ups or drop-offs at this property because of the condition of the road. After 9:00 or 10:00 PM it is very difficult to find a publico so I suggest when you get to the island make sure you get a business card from any of the drivers so you can call him if you need a ride.
