Snorkeling Questions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, everyone!

I'm new to this wonderful forum. I have a question (apologies in advance if it seems stupid or silly).

My family and I will be in PR from the end of March to beginning of April. We plan on spending a couple of days in Culebra. Now for the question: I can't swim (not even aa beginner level), I can't float but I love the water! I have never gone snorkeling and I wondered if there is a way or place where I can take my family to do some basic snorkeling that doesn't require me swimming. I know, I know, it's pathetic, but that's life... :-)

Is swimming a must for snorkeling (I know it is for diving).

Thank you for any advice! I look forward to your input.

You do need really need to know how to swim to snorkel. Since you are wearing a snorkel you will float and be able to breathe and enjoy the water. Wearing a life jacket might be a good idea, evne though they are designed to turn you on your back, with all the flotation in the front. Whatever makes you feel comfortable should work!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Thanks a lot, Michael.

I'm a bit confused by your first sentence. Did you mean "You DON'T really need to know how to swim to snorkel" or did you mean "You DO really need to know how to swim to snorkel"?

I hope it's the first one :-)

BTW, my wife and two daughters can swim - I'm the only lost case in the family. Incredibly, I love music, I love water but have never been able to learn to dance or swim. It's really weird, because I don't suffer from any physical impediments whatsoever...go figure

Anyway, I'm really excited about this trip. It's our 3rd. straight yearly trip to the island. We fell in love with the food, the beauty of Puerto Rico and its people on our very first day there 2 years ago (neither my wife nor I have any Puerto Rican roots, but we adore the place). It's just great!

May I suggest buying a snorkel vest and bringing that along? You can get it at any dive shop and I'm sure you can find one on the internet. My husband does not know how to swim but he does snorkel very well since he can breathe through the tube. ;-) You can practice in the shallow waters before venturing out.

Of course, it's never too late to learn basic swimming skills. I only learned how to swim when I was 30 yrs old because I was determined to at least have some comfort level in the water so I can enjoy snorkeling. And now, enjoy it I do. I took private swimming lessons so I could learn at my own pace. =)
