I can now write my trip report. Reason.....I have booked another trip in November to Culebra! I was so "homesick" to get back to Culebra and knowing I would not have much travel funds left after sending my oldest to college this year , I couldn't even visit this site. I know unless you have been to the island, this sounds silly and a little dramatic. But once you experienced Culebra, you will understand. My 17 year old daughter and I came to Culebra on 3/29/05 for a special trip before she graduated high school in May. Words will probably not do this island justice, but here goes.
I have traveled to 10 countries and I have never seen the beauty that this island holds. Not only natural beauty, but the people you find on Culebra and their willingness to share this place with you. Amazing!
Our adventure started when we arrived in San Juan and waited for hours for the Isla Nena flight to happen (there is no room in this report for negative things but I will say that like everything else on this site about having patience in making your way to the island is TRUE! Don't let it ruin your trip to paradise). We met Kathleen and her friend Sue. I still chuckle thinking of our flight over with them.....did I forget to mention that Sue is TERRIFIED to fly on big planes let alone tiny little puddle jumpers. We all talked 100 miles a minute to distract her from looking out the window. It worked. When we landed we called all the numbers for the taxis but since our flight was late no one was available. Kathleen, who owns a house on the island volunteered to help us get to Tamarindo Estates. Because it was well past check-in and I was having a "chicken little" moment , I missed the numbers to call after hours for check-in. So I asked Kathleen to take us to another hotel and when we arrived we found out there were basically no rooms left on the island due to a water problem. Kathleen graciously invited us to stay at her home that night. She took us to Tamarindo the next morning and I tried to pay her for her kindness but she wouldn't take anything. Kathleen explained to me that this is the "Culebra Way" of helping people. She said when she first came to the island she was treated this way and now she passes it on to others!
