Does anyone know if there are any problems with mosquitos and/or no-see-ums at the campground in Feb?
Thanks-

In Flamenco there are always mosquitoes, there is a lagoon in that area.

They bother you mostly after 0500pm.

A repellant spritzer of Off, Cutter or Skinsosoft is mighty cheap insurance against these miscreants. Mostly they are anklebiters, so a spritz on the ankles is usually sufficient. If you find yourself leeward with no breeze at dusk, a more comprehensive application is in order.

At the end of Feb. early March my calves and ankles have been severely bitten by no see ums, when walking the beach at dusk and night. Apply repellent or cover completely. The bites really itch and last a long time. I don't know how much of the year they are a pest. I think there are fire ants there too. ouch!

Kathy,

A couple of other hints. Avoid perfumes and other scented cosmetics. Try to avoid the leeward side of the island at dusk, and if there, use repellent. As I mentioned, they go for your ankles, but at dusk I found it very helpful to spray my hand and apply at my hairline, too.

I've seen fire ants on the island, but not on the beach. They are hard to miss, being bright red, so just watch where you sit.

Just got back form 2 weeks there, and the no see ums were a problem. We stayed at Flamenco Beach while our friends stayed at Tamarindo, and we were both plagued. We were not able to determine if they were from our trip to Lois Pena or Zoni though, as we spent a lot of time in the shade and sand there also. My husband and his sister both had welts for several days and required benedryl every 6 hours and anti itch cream of some sort for a few days. Pams were on her legs, primarily thighs, and Bob's were thigs, ankles and lower back, so likely it happened on the beach. Mostly they stop itching if you don't scratch if you can do that! We didn't use any repelent which would have certainly helped, but often the bites don't show up until later so it was too late. I definately wouldn't let it effect my trip, too beautiful a place to miss just because of a few bugs. Next time though I will use bug spray any time I am in the shade or out of the wind, and after dusk. Would also bring some benedryl, after- bite, and maybe some of the green aloe and lidocaine gel just in case. Good luck and have fun. I have some pictures of the campground area, email me if you would like them. Jean

Roatan in Honduras is the same way but nothing that a little repellant can't take care of. The pain is having to be diligent about it. :)

And by all means, do not step on any of those fire ants. They burn! They hang out in paths to the beach (mainly Tomarindo beach), and up near the helicopter pad by Flemenco Beach.
