Villa_Flamenco_Beach

Has anyone stayed here? We are visiting for 2 weeks in January, and this looks like a place we would like to stay. Our primary interests are swimming, lying on the beach snorkel and scuba, so the island looks perfect. Just wondering about things like mosquitos, crowds that time of year, ability to leave a boat on the beach overnight, and how clean and comfortable the units are. Would also love it if anyone has any pictures of the villas, as there are not may on the web site. Thanks! Jean

I have not stayed there - but I have seen it and based on that would never stay there. My husband and I stayed at the Culebra Beach Villas for our wedding/honeymoon which is right next to Villa Flamenco Beach and we commented how lucky we were that we chose the place we did and not the place next door. I would highly recommend Culebra Beach Villas if you want to stay right on Flamenco and don't mind being outside of "town". The Beach villas have kitchens and decks and we had no problem at all calling taxis to come out there to get us to go to dinner etc. - all in all it is a wonderful place! We can't wait to go back. I disagree with Andra. We had 3 families rent most of the rooms at Villa Flamenco Beach all at the same time. We found it very nice and all felt that we would rather stay there than at Culebra Beach Villas next door, although I don't feel strongly about avoiding CBV. VFB was clean, well run, had everything we needed including cooking and we are going back. CBV would be better for a spring break going wild, but VFB would be better for reading a book and resting (we didn't get too much rest with all the kids we brought).

to say Culebra Beach Villas is like spring break gone wild is completely false. We were there in the tourist season over Christmas and New Years and it was very quiet and relaxing.

Thanks for your replies. It is beginig to sound like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as I have heard negative things about both places as well as positive ones. Hopefully we will enjoy Villa Flamenco, and the beaches even if it is not the "perfect place" to stay. Any other advice or pictures would be appreciated though. Jean

We stayed at Culebra Beach Villas, top floor of main unit, at the end of March. Our apartment was in poor shape, with shutters that were painted closed, a leaking roof in the living room (puddles on the floor after a rain shower), missing kitchen supplies, bathrooms not cleaned when we arrived. They also shut off the water for quite a bit of the time we were there - not okay for the price as we had been told by the manager that they would turn on CBV's water pump whenever the mainland shut off the water supply - but it was broken. The noise level just depends on who is there while you are - we had quite a few partying parties going on well into the night, and no manager on site to keep things under control. That being said, we could not have asked for a more beautiful spot and we loved our week despite the sub par conditions.
After talking to several people staying next door at Villa Flamenco Beach, next time we will try there - the reports were of clean, comfortable, quiet conditions, as well as attentive and on site owner/managers.

I have not stayed there and have heard bad and good reviews, bad seems to have the highest score.
You have to mention more about the boat, is it yours, is it rented ?
In the Flamenco area boats are not allowed to anchor close to the shore, either you have to be a good swimer or a good walker to get to your place.
I have heard Culebra Beach Villas are very good, I have not stayed there neither.
As for mosquitos, there is a lagoon very close, so ... even I believe they have a "schedule" lets say from about 1730 to 2000, they might get to you.

I believe it is appropriate to say that most good reviews are not posted, since customers do not take the time to do so.
On the contrary, unsatisfied customers use the forum to express their concerns for what they could not solve while there.
You make your choices, and try to enjoy the best of your stay.

Still confused here about the bad reviews as no one is specific. Need to know just what was wrong to make any judgements. I really appreciate the help though, and would love any pictures or information on what the problems with the place are, so I can decide if they are something I can deal with or not. I don't need or expect fancy in Culebra. I just want a beautiful beach, a great place to snorkel, and a clean place to stay with hot water, air conditioning and a kitchen. Villa Flamenco still seems to be the most economical choice on a beach, but I'm still looking for more information. Thanks again for all the help. As to the boat question Jose; we will be renting a 14 or 16 foot boat to explore and snorkel, no choices made yet. Jean

I met a wonderful couple from Michigan more than one year ago.
I met them at Villa Boheme, and took them fishing in my boat.
Unfortunately I have no boat now, but you can rent them at Casa Ensenada.
Always check the celular phone, as most of them do not work well when you are at La Pela or Culebrita.
If you decide to go to Culebrita, be very careful after you get past La Pela, because the entrance to Culebrita may get very dangerous.
As a matter of indication, after you navigate through Ensenada on you way east, there are visible reefs marked with the green and red bouys.
At your starboard side ( right ) you'll see DAKITY, immediately after passing DAKITY, you turn to port, some minutes you'll see La Pela at your port side, if you keep going through that channel, Culebrita is at your starboard, but the entrance to the best beach Culebra has ( that is where it may get dangerous ) is on the north side.
That entrance gets strong currents SOMETIMES, you will notice if it is bad with plenty of time to turn around.

We rented a motorboat on our February trip to Culebra. It was a great experience. We rented from Butch at Culebra Boat Rental ( Casa Ensenada) for 2 days. Had an 18' v-hull, 40 hp; clean, comfy. Good price. We had 4 adults and it was perfect. Has a ladder, cooler, bimini top, cell phone. Snorkeling off the boat was so easy and awesome. Went over to Culebrita. We highly recommend it!
Our first choice for lodging was Villa Flamenco Beach too but it was all booked. We rented an apartment unit that was okay but would've prefered being closer to town. Flamenco Beach is beautiful but there is a large lagoon right behind Villa Flamenco Beach that might be smelly and filled with mosquitos this time of year. I'm not sure. Villa Flamenco Beach is directly next door to Coconuts Beach Bar (great food and drinks) and Culebra Beach Villas (30+ units) so there is activity all around. We are not sure where we would stay if we returned but we would definitely return.

I don't really understand the negative reviews in that I've stayed there many times in February and every year it's mostly the same people., all of whom book for the following year prior to departure.

There are 6 apartments in the building. ( 2 one-bedroom downstairs & 4 efficiency upstairs. I would avoid the downstairs left(with your back to the beach )- it's dark. I'd also avoid the efficiency in the right rear. (It seems crowded to me.)

Given the choice, I'd book the upstairs front on the left. (It's a bit quieter than the one on the right which gets some noice from the place next door.)

We've never had a problem. It's clean, quiet, well maintained, right on the beach, no TV's, no phones, etc.

My husband and I stayed at Villa Fulladoza, owned and ran privately. We went in May. There is no a/c there but we were rarely there during the day. Some days we would come in and out of our room, which feels so cool due to the breeze blowing in from the bay. The villa is bay front. The view is great with lots of sailboats. We did not miss the a/c at all. At night, we kept our shutters opened. If I remember correctly, there were screens. I do remember that we had no problems w/mosquitoes even when we were enjoying the stars outside on the back deck right at the bay. The place is very very clean. When we went there, we were the only ones there so we picked the room that we want and had the whole place to ourselves the majority of the time. The owners/managers are very trusting...like family. They didn't charge us for our 3wks stay until it was time for us to go....which at that time, they didn't even remind us to pay but luckily we remembered. It's quite and cozy. I'm very picky about cleanliness and if we were to go back to Culebra, I would stay there again. On top of all that, it's very affordable. Hope this helps.

Oh my... The place is not terrible. It's just that there are so many better places to stay on the island as most of you will agree.

Few drawbacks :
- Although you are quite far from everything (although u can roll to Flamingo), it is sometimes quite loud and crowded on week-ends.
- There is some standing water nearby and there are quite a few mosquitoes.
- It does not have a lot of character.

But then again, it's fine.

Like the person above, I would go with Fulladoza which is very good value.

The mosqiotos there are voracious when the wind settles down. Make sure you bring some Off. I think it's the official perfume of Culebra.

One other thing. We met some folk who were staying at CBV and they told us that they could not flush toilet paper down the toilet. Consequently, they took their trash out quite often! We didn't run into this issue at Tamarindo Estates. I'm not sure if this restriction applies only to CBV or other areas on the island. Perhaps someone else can answer that question.

We have stayed in both Mexico and the Dominican republic, and in both places were asked to not flush the toilet paper wherever we stayed except for the posh resorts. I think this is an attempt to save the enviorment where there is poor drainage and rocky soil. We have had to deal with this several times, and found that we could be selective about what we flushed without much problem! We try hard to respect the needs of the foriegn communities that we stay in although it is really inconvenient by US standards. Glad to hear that Flamenco is fine about the flushing though!
