Tamarindo Estates
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I may be over thinking this, but is it odd that I cannot contact these people by phone? I have e-mailed them my phone number and they insist on using e-mail and fax for all correspondence. I tried to call and was referred to the website by a recorded voice on the phone. Is this unusual? Thanks!

We just got back two weeks ago and Tamarindo Estates is great. I never talked to anyone either, just booked over the web. You check in at the airport (quick ride from ferry dock) and they are waiting for you. Give you a truck and you cruise over a hill and into a secluded little paradise. It has snorkeling, a restaurant/bar and beach all within the nature reserve. Air conditioning in the room, outdoor and indoor shower ... indoor has hot water. Room with ice, coolers, beach towels, video collection, etc., all available for your use during your stay.

I am so glad to hear about the really positive feedback you gave on Tamarindo Estates. My husband and I are counting the days down to our arrival in Culebra (first timers). We have booked a two-week stay at Tamarindo. I also only corresponded through e-mails and Jose was always very prompt with replys back to me. It was my gut feeling to book our vacation there and I think we'll be very pleased we did so. I'll give my feedback once we return home in mid-October.

Eunie
I feel obligated to warn you about Tamarindo Estates. Although it is a beautiful place there are some things you must know before hand. First, you must rent a car for your entire stay because the place is very secluded and local taxis will not go there unless it is a large group. (they charge by person) Second, you must know that the beach they have is not swimming, it is stricktly for snorkeling. Third, you must know that you will have to buy your own groceries because the restaurant they have is only open a few times during the day. Finally you must know that the swimming pool is 5 feet deep all the way around so if you have small children they will not enjoy the swimming pool that much. I understand that if you go there knowing these things I just told you, you will have a great time because the place is beautiful and the island is beautiful. PS Do not leave the island without going to Flamenco Beach, it is the most beautiful beach I have seen in my life and it was named the 2nd best beach in the United States by a TV program in the Travel Channel last year. Best wishes, Roberto

Hi Roberto!

Thanks for the input you gave regarding Tamarindo Estates. I throughly investigated my options of lodging for the two weeks that my husband and I will be staying (no kids). Tamarindo seemed to fit our life style of peace and tranquility. The package that we purchased with Tamarindo has a car or 4X4 included...so our transportation needs are meant. I knda figured the beach was more of a snorkeling beach...which is OK with us. We will be exploring every beach possible on the island in that two weeks stay. Was really not planning on eating out every meal and hitting the grocery stores in town for food...a nice kitchen is provided in the cottage and we can eat under our covered veranda. Swimming pool sounds perfect for me. I'm not a real strong swimmer. Probably no water rescue for me!!! Pool sounds like a good place to lounge! How I found about Culebra was through the Travel Channel, the segment featured Culebra back in 2002. After seeing that segment I told my husband someday we will be fortunate enough to see this little piece of unspoiled paradise. The days are being count down and we are so ready to chill out!!! Again, thanks for the advice you gave. If you think of anything else to share, please write in.

Take Care!

Kit-- it doesn't strike me as odd at all. Almost all of the hotels in Culebra are run by families and they do all the shopping, cleaning, etc and have their own lives so they may not be at home always to answer their calls and find that email suits them better to be able to give prompt replies. I cannot confirm that this is the case, but I lived in culebra for over a year and that strikes me as a logical explanation. Tamarindo Estates is in a beautiful part of culebra (with all of the conditions that roberto described above).

Eunie-- make sure you get out to Zoni beach! Flamenco is the main beach that everyone goes to and it is gorgeous, but I always prefered zoni. It's less traveled (taxis don't go there) on the saint thomas side of culebra and I think it is even more stunning than Flamenco.

That's not odd at all, we had a similar experience when we booked this last May. But trust me it's worth it. I believe the owners are not always on the island, they leave the caretaking to their staff of caretakers who are fabulous and very friendly! If you're looking for a more private quiet area than downtown to stay at- this is your place!!
Just be patient - they'll get in touch with you eventually - remember this is Island Time! Not our hustle & bustle type of attitudes towards schedules! Embrace it & relax!

AnnaMaria,

The website says there is no restaurant at Tamarindo Estates. You say there is. I am just confirming that there is a restaurant on the Tamarindo Estates premises where we can get coffee and a small breakfast in the morning. Is this the case?

Thank you,
Kimberly

Kimberly,

The restaurant at Tamarindo Estates is open Wed to Sun in the evening. It is not open for breakfast or lunch.
