they are scheduled to arrive every sunday into this spring. as fas as i can tell from the half dozen or so times they have been here already they really add nothing to our economy to speak of. a few publico drivers make some money taking the cruisers to flamenco but that's about it. many businesses are closed or have limited hours on sundays so no real benefit there either. the cruise ships have food and booze on board so why spend your money ashore?
my biggest complaint is that the cruise ship arrives early on sunday mornings and leaves thei huge diesel powered generator running all damn day! the exhaust fumes from the generator are carried into town on the prevailing trade winds and we all have to breathe that toxic output from the ship for a fulll day with no real benefit to the community to offset the health hazard imposed by the cruise ship.
in addition there is no mooring for the cruise ship so every week they drop an anchor in our beautiful bay that tears up the bottom. our bay is critical habitat for sea turtles, manatee, and a host of othe fishes and birds.
i am not a fan of the cruise ships. at the very least the company should be required to put in a permanent ship sized mooring so they tie up at the exact same place everytime and stop tearing up the bottom of our bay.
i would also be interested to know if this cruise ship is paying any type of fee to our municipality for the use of our resources as they are required to do in st. thomas?
