How much to plan ahead?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

I'm a first time visitor to Culebra and a first time poster. I've been reading topics on the forum and they have been very helpful, but I'm also a big planner and hoping for a little bit of clarification.

We are arriving via VAL on Sunday afternoon, March 18 and staying at Culebra Beach Rentals for four nights. I am assuming we can pick up groceries in town on foot and then take a publico to where we are staying. Is that a safe assumption?

We are looking forward to snorkeling while we are on Culebra and it sounds like Flamenco beach where we are staying is not the best place on the island for snorkeling. Can we get a publico or taxi from Culebra Beach Rentals to Tamarindo or another snorkeling beach?

If we wanted to do a day sail/snorkel trip, can those be booked in town when we arrive, or should I try to arrange those before we arrive?

If we want to rent a jeep for a day, can that be booked when we arrive, or should I arrange before?

In the evening, if we want to have dinner in town, can we get a publico or other inexpensive transportation from Culebra Beach Rentals?

Obviously my primary questions are about transportation on the island and I have read the "getting around" section on the website, but I'm still a little confused.

Thanks for your help!
Suzanne

You can walk to Carlos Rosario from Flamenco -- it's about 20 minutes. If you zoom in on Google Earth you can actually see the trail from the Flamenco parking lot over the hill to Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo. There is excellent snorkeling there.

There are publicos running back and forth from town during the day, but I do not know how late they run in the evenings. We have never used them. If it were me, I would simply ask a driver when you see them at the Flamenco parking lot -- maybe you can arrange to have them take you where and when you need to go.

If you want to rent a vehicle for a day or two, I'd say your best bet is in mid-week. There are only 3 places that rent vehicles -- Jerry's, Carlos, and Dick and Cathie (VW Things) and they have limited fleets. They may very well be booked up. I'd suggest calling ahead.

As I recall, the best selection of groceries is at Mayra's or Colmado Milka, neither of which is close to the airport.

Colmado El Sol has a good selection of items too and is near the airport.

You can generally, and I say generally, catch a publico in the evening when the last ferry arrives. After that, probably not.

A publico will take you to Tamarindo as well. That saves your energy for the walk back ;)

Peace out
Herb
