Culebra as honeymoon destination: Your thoughts.
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My fiancee and I recently decided to visit Culebra for our honeymoon. We'd heard great things about the beach from some acquaintances, and after some research, found that it would be more convenient but just as beautiful and less tourist-trappy than the Mexican destinations we were originally considering.

As we've researched places to stay, my fiancee has become increasingly concerned about whether Culebra is for her. Specifically, she's beginning to worry that it might be TOO remote and small -- that there won't be opportunities to eat good food, enjoy a little night life, and maybe make a couple of day trips to somewhere other than the beach.

So my question to you is, are her fears founded? Or will she find that Culebra has plenty of restaurants and other opportunities for food and entertainment?

It's worth noting that we're planning on staying 4-6 nights, and were strong considering the Culebra Beach Villas on Flamenco Beach. And that brings me to another, final question: Is it fairly easy to get from the Villas to other parts of the town? Is bike rental an option?

And finally, what is the best way to get from San Juan to the island?

Hola!
Your future wife sounds like my husband and teenager. While I am content to do nothing but be at the beach, they get bored of that after the first day. Search this FORUM as many of your questions will be answered, such as the best way to get from San Juan to Culebra (many options to choose from), places to eat (the are many, some more favorite than others, I like El Batey), there are a couple of places that have karaoke and guitarists/singers on certain evenings such as Dingy Dock and Mamacitas, there is a bike rental (look under TRANSPORT for bike, scooters and car rental), the places where you want to stay are great, right on the beach.
Read Culebra's local newspaper: The Culebra Calendar:
http://theculebracalendaronline.com/
for more info.
I think you will waste time if you plan day trips once you are in Culebra and go to back to the mainland.Best to plan them before or after Culebra, if you can and have time, or plan for another return trip, maybe a second honeymoon?
Use this website to get the info you need, ask more questions if you need to, we will help.
Happy travels! J

Try Suzie's Restaurant for dinner. You will repeat it. Also El Batey for great Hamburgers. Dinghy Dock has a great breakfast. Mamacitas on weekends for breakfast is great too. Besides Flamenco Beach(which I could visit eternally), you HAVE to go to Culebrita. You can contact Luis in Ocean View Villas who has a water Taxi to get there. Bring plenty of sunscreen, and I mean PLENTY. If you are fair skinned you will need tons of it. If darker skinned, do the same. If planning on renting a bike for the whole trip be in good physical shape, as Culebra can be a little bit demanding if you want to visit more remote areas( 15 minutes by car) hahaha. If night life is what you are looking for, stay home or go somewhere else, if you are looking for the greatest romantic time all by yourselves, the best beach in the world, Paradise on Earth as I call it, you are more than welcome to visit Culebra. Do a research on this Forum and every question you have will be answered.. Enjoy

Good afternoon Matt,
Congrats. on your engagement.

We have had many honeymooners stay with us, however Culebra isn't right for everyone.

No big hotels, no chain restaurants, very little shopping, very little night life (comparably), no casinos. For some folks it is more "rustic," however, it is very natural & beautiful. There is nice hiking, beautiful swimming & snorkeling, friendly folks, & quaint little shops & restaurants.

You might have a look at http://culebrablog.com for some add'l photos & video of the island to give you a better senseof what Culebra has to offer.

Good luck planning your trip!

Hi Matt
here is my two cents.
How much partying does your fiance want to do?

you might be better off with one or two weekend nights in San Juan, and two days on Cluebra and two days on Vieques.

What month were eyou thinking of? the tourist season makes a difference with restaurants.

On both Vieques and Culebra, nightlife is pretty much finding a stoll at a bar.
not real clubs.

Thats why a friday night and saturday night might be good for you
especially if its the end of the trip.

The first time I went to Culebra, we dived with a guy who had brought his girlfriend to Culebra to propose to her. She hated it. He loved it. It was too rustic for her. The towels weren't fluffy. The windows didn't shut all the way. The A/C wasn't cold enough. The owners weren't on site to assist with "problems" because it was off-season. And on and on. I met her; she did not seem like a fussy person, but when you get used to a certain standard. . .

No matter how much some of us love Culebra, the reality is that it is not for everyone. Maybe you should consider a couple of nights on-island with the rest in a posh resort on the main island.

You will need a car if you want to get from the beach to town at night. The publicos are not always available.

Hope this helps.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I appreciate everyone's responses. They've been incredibly helpful.

Also, I'm afraid I've misrepresented my fiancee, Amy, just a bit. She isn't really into partying (or bar-hopping, or clubbing, or anything of that nature), and she certainly doesn't particularly like chain restaurants. What I meant to get across in my original post is that she was initially concerned that Culebra might be home to too few options for entertainment and dining to justify a six night stay (which is what we were planning, at first). However, the more we've learned about the island, the more we think it's perfect for us.

That brings me to a new question: I said we would be honeymooning. But we're actually interested in getting married while there. Nothing big -- it would just be the two of us, ideally outdoors, with someone certified to legally marry us kindly doing the honors.

Does anyone have recommendations with regards to how we might go about getting this done? Are there any potential roadblocks (paperwork, bloodtests, etc) that we should be aware of?

I appreciate your help. Thanks again for reading.

Best,
Matt

Hola! Check these editions of the local Culebra newspaper, The Culebra Calendar:

http://www.culebraonline.com/Julio%202009/pages/page_26.html

http://www.culebraonline.com/Mayo%202009/pages/page_26.html

http://www.culebraonline.com/March%202009/pages/page_23.html

All these lucky people were married in Culebra right on the beach a couple of months ago. See if you can contact any of them, you should at least contact Taz. He owns Aquatic Adventures Dive Service right in Culebra and just got married in May, lucky guy, LOL!!!! Felicidades!
You can also find out from the articles what beaches they got married on, where was the reception, etc. You do have to have blood work and paperwork so you can get your marriage certificate afterwords. Don't leave things for the last minute as you may have to take care of some things on the mainland before arriving to Culebra. Plan ahead. How exiting, Felicidades!
It's been 18 years since I got married on the island and things have changed a bit. I found this application in the Registro Demografico of Puerto Rico where you have to fill out a Marriage Certificate Application (scroll to the end where it says in English, Marriage Certificate Application):

http://www.salud.gov.pr/PROGRAMAS/REGISTRODEMOGRAFICO/Pages/RequisitosparasolicituddeMatrimonio.aspx:

Also look at this info about getting married in Puerto Rico:

http://welcome.topuertorico.org/tinfo.shtml

scroll down to where it says Vital Records and to Marriage License Information. You want to make sure after you have the ceremony, to have the actual marriage certificate.
Happy travels! J

My husband and I eloped on Flamenco Beach in Culebraand it was perfect. I highly recommend it! We were there a few days ahead of time and got all the necessary tests and licenses done in Fajardo prior to heading over to Culebra. We used a jude out of Fajardo (there aren't any in Culebra) named Jose Millan. I can get you his phone number if you are interested. You will need two witnesses to sign your paperwork after your marriage. We were eloping, so we didn't have anyone there to do this so when my husband met with the judge prior to our wedding day he was informed of this. So, we paid for the judge and two of his friends to fly from fajardo to Culebra for the wedding and his friends acted as our witnesses and also as our photographer and videographer. $50 for a wedding photographer is a deal!! Let me know if you need any more help or info. and congrats!

Wow! How exciting! My two cents: have you thought about having the ceremony at dawn? I myself was married (33 years ago this Saturday!) at dawn on a beach in Massachusetts with just five people present, and the time of day - just as it was turning light, concluding with the sun peeking up - lent the proceedings a deeply calm and spiritual quality. Meditators claim that dawn and dusk each have a special power.

Also - once the sun gets high, the beach can be hot as hell!
