Hi guys and gals, love the forums! There insight and information was invaluable to my last trip to Culebra two years ago and some well priced tickets to San Juan From Boston brings me back again. Nothing will be changing from before, except that I will camping at Flamenco beach for 4 great days instead of 2 and I'll certainly need to hit up Vieques for some Kayaking at night on Mosquito bay :-) So I imagine I'll be doing some camping at Sun Bay.
Anyways, my itinerary was something like this last time:
After arriving in I SJU, I caught the bus from the airport and spent the afternoon and night in Old San Juan. Next morning I caught the A5 bus, then the B40 bus to Rio Piedra and after some aimless roaming I eventually found the Publico and got a ride directly to the port and bought my tickets for the 3pm ferry to Vieques. After a few days there I hit up the ferry again and I went to Culebra. Tee way back was easy, as I ran into a couple that decided to get a car in Fajardo and they gave me a ride back to the airport when I paid the gas. All in all, pretty easy stuff.
This time however, the only hitch will be getting back for my departure from SJU by 17h50. From what I gather is:
1.) I leave Flamenco beach at 4h30am and walk into town to catch the ferry for 06h30 to Fajardo.
Q1.) Anyone, working the beach publicos that early on a Sunday? I doubt it, but can someone provide me a number to whom I can get someone to pick me up for an extra fee at say 06h00?
2.) I walk or get a publico to the Fajardo station from the Fajardo port?
Q2. Does someone have a map from the Ferry to the Publico station in Fajardo as well as personal experience/knowledge that the publicos are running on Sunday? The other would be if they meet at the ferry then I suppose I won't need a publico to the terminal which would be best. If anyone has a number of someone I can call that would be great to make sure that things are pre-arranged.
3.) Rio Piedras to SJU airport. I think this is fairly comprehensive. If I can get into town by 13h00, I figure I can catch a bus that would get me to the airport by 16h30.
So based on my questions, is this at all possible? I'm trying to avoid the high costs of travel so I can spend the rest of my money on food and leisure activities offered on the island during my 5 full days there. The other option, though more costly, would be to take a plane from the island to SIU and then a bus to the international SJU. At a comparison of $10.00 via public transport to $60 for a flight, I prefer the satisfation of knowing that I can come again and again in the future knowing I'm saving $50 each time :-)
Thanks for all your help. I'll be sure to trip by the establishments in Dewey and try out restaurants and adventure outfits...can't wait to try scuba diving!
