getting around culebra

We (2) will be on Culebra from 1/15 til 1/23 (maybe til 1/27 if we decide not to do a road tour of the big island). Sounds like a car is not an every-day essential, what with cabs, bikes & publicos. We've found that rental cars tend to isolate you from contact with everyone, and we like to ride bikes. I wonder if it would work to book a car for just 3 or few days, and improvise the rest of the time. Are bikes, taxis, even hitching with other visitors reasonable (& economical) alternatives?
Also, any recommendations for car rentals? Some say Carlos, some say Jerry, what about Dick & Cathy?
Also, we want to visit some of the cays, & are looking at renting a motorboat for a day (1/22). Would it be simpler to rely on watertaxis?
Gracias for any feedback! I have a feeling that it's all going to come together smoothly.
M.S.

Hey Michael, I will also be in Culebra around the same time. I will be their from January 13th through the 16th at the Casa Enseneda Guesthouse. The publicos will take you into town, restaurants and Flamenco Beach. but it is difficult to take cabs or publicos to remote places. Since some of the beaches and snorkeling sights are remote some are served better going by foot and others you will need a car. If you want to visit Zoni Beach, this will require a car since most taxis or publicos don't like to make the trip since they will probably not have a return fare coming back to town. It won't be necessary to rent a car for your entire stay but I would rent from Carlos since he has the most dependable fleet of cars. I have taken water taxis to Culebrita but that is the extent of my experience on a water taxi.

Enjoy Culebra

You can definitely get along without a car, especially if you're staying near town. Even Zoni is an easy bike ride from town (if you're fit) but carrying your gear would be a challenge so you'll probably need a car to go out there. We were there for a week and stayed directly across from the airport and walked into town every evening for dinner. We attempted to walk to Flamenco each morning but a local would always stop and offer us a ride.

yeah Zoni if you're fit...

but if you are, it's worth it, may have to be an entire day's effort...

pack a lunch. 'cause there's nothing out there

if you are serious bikers (as in the pedal kind) you'll be fine, but it is hillly. and deceptively far. and even in a jeep if feels quite remote - which is part of the the attraction. I can't imagine riding a bike out there, even a jeep takes about 20 minutes.

there is one hilly turn where a local almost front-ended me once, but we all swerved in time.

but I'd just look into renting a jeep or scooters.

and if you want to avoid vehicles, hike to Rosario from the Flamenco parking lot, it's a 20 minute walk and well worth it.

avoid the unexploded ordinance (stay to the path)

I have walked to Zoni, but that was more than 10 years ago, and had to fight off people who wanted to give me a ride. That does not happen anymore, but I am sure you still can get rides if you wanted one!

Enjoy Culebra!

Last July, we saw a group of boy scouts (or explorers or whatever they are called on PR) on Zoni Beach, and we wondered how they got there, and how they were getting back. There were not enough cars in the parking lot to support this "pack" of boys and their leaders. They left the beach about 1/2 an hour before we did. As we left, we could see them, ALL of them, walking up that big ass hill on their way back to town. Were they nuts, we wondered? The last stragglers were the troop leader and two boys. In Spanglish, we figured out that they had a publico drop them off, but no one told them that the publico wouldn't come back, nor could they get a cell signal. So we picked them up and headed back to town. The other scouts were so mad as we passed them when they saw these folks in our car, but we couldn't take them ALL you know. The leader finally got a cell signal somewhere around Costa Bonita, and arranged for publicos to start picking up the others, and we dropped our guests off at the airport. They would have been walking till about 8pm by our estimates!

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I have happily rented Jeeps from Jerry twice (and will do so again in January). Nothing fancy, but they got the job done.
If you are comfortable in a kayak, that can be a good way to see Luis Pena. I rented from Jim (at Barbara Rosa's), who keeps some boats stashed on Tamarindo beach. I used a water taxi (Captain Pat) to get to Culebrita, and didn't find it a hassle at all.
Have fun.
