On my latest trip I had a pair of 9ft long oars with me, so my options for travel seemed very limited: Ferry and then a público guaga (all for myself), since a regular car or the small plane would not and could not accommodate me and my oars.
I usually either share a cab, get a ride or fly.
Not this time - and I had the best time!
I asked the driver to take the scenic route via Loíza, turning right at Rio Grande on the highway. The road goes through cow pastures, overhanging trees and along the Atlantic Ocean.
My goal was not only to enjoy the (expensive, $60) trip as much as possible, I also wanted a batida and some of the best frituritas in Puerto Rico: Piñones.
My driver and I were sipping our guineo, papaya y piña con leche batidas, eating our baccalaitos overlooking the surf.
After that it's a short ride to SJU.
What a way to leave the island!
Enjoy Culebra!
