planning trip to culebra and vieques
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi all,

My husband and I went to Culebra for a week-long trip last Feb, we got married in June, and now are going back for the first 2 weeks in December for a belated honeymoon!

So I have a couple questions. Last time we stayed at Maritza's guesthouse, which we really liked except that I got eaten by mosquitos (he did not). So I was thinking this time of staying at Villa Fulladosa. We want to spend less than $100 a night, and we need to have a kitchen (as vegetarian, the food options at restaurants are way limited!). Any thoughts on that?

Secondly, we want to spend a few days in Vieques. We definitely want to check out the bioluminescent bay, but other than that, don't have any plans/ideas. Any suggestions about where to stay/where to go? I'd appreciate ideas from like-minded people, ie other people who love Culebra!

Thanks,
Sabina

Be sure to check the lunar calendar, and plan your bio-luminescent bay trip for when it is least bright.

Thanks Doug. I checked the calendar just now, it looks like Dec 11th or 12th is our best bet. Very good to know!

About Maritza's: we did really truly like it there, in fact, that's where my husband wants to stay. I'm only apprehensive about the mosquitos. But we didn't try putting on the A/C, which probably would've helped a lot. So maybe I'll reconsider that...

My wife and I have stayed at Villa Fulladoza twice (the first time on our honeymoon) and have been very happy with it both times. There is no air conditioning, but we didn't miss it. The screens were tight enough to keep the mosquitos at bay. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Enjoy!

I just came back from Culebra and Vieques on Nov.2. My husband and I stayed in Villa Fulladosa (Culebra) and Sea Gate (Vieques). Villa Fulladosa has a lot of cats (maybe more than 6) and Sea Gate has a lot of horses and dogs. If you like animals, it is fine. But, I was not used to the smell of cats at Fulladosa. The horseback riding tour in the Sea Gate was very fun ($65 per person for a 2 hour ride). (went to town, top of hill to see beautiful views of Culebra and St. Tomas from Vieques, beach with Sunset). Both have kitchens.

You may need a jeep in Vieques since it is a lot bigger than Culebra. Both places are $65-70. We stayed on the 3rd floor of Sea Gate (nice views and breeze) When I was there, there were a lot of mosquitoes, especially in Culebra. Apparently it had rained for 6 straight days before we got there.

We recommend that you visit Culebrita if you get the chance. But take along plenty of Deet because otherwise the mosquitoes will eat you alive. If you can arrange water transportation to the other side of Culebrita, Tortuga Beach is a true paradise. DO NOT attempt to take the hiking path to the other side (to get to Tortuga). If the swarm of mosquitoes don't get you first, the thorny overgrown brush will. We got the full brunt of both.

The sunset is nice to view from the deck of Mar Azul (a bar) near the Vieques ferry. Happy hour is from 5-7 PM. Medalla beer is $1 each. We drank quite a few!

Thanks Yoko for your inputs! My fiancé and I are going to culebra for thanksgiving? I hope the mosquitoes won't bother us to much as we are planning on Camping for few days! I read that you went to culebra by plane using VAL airlines, is it really 50$ one way? We found only 190$ round trip (San Juan- Culebra), which we found quite expensive...
Thanks!

I am not sure if the price goes up during holiday season. But, my husband and I took flight from Isla Grande to Culebra by using Air Flamenco, for $50 per person one way. When I spoke with VAL people, they told me that around $87 one way to San Juan International from Vieques, but it's only around $48 to Isla Grande (I forgot the exact fare). I also read and heard about the different air fare of two air port. Going and coming from Isla Grande are cheaper. There is $20 taxi fare between San Juan and Isla Grande. Coming back from Vieques, we took ferry to Fajardo ($2.00) and rent a car (about $80). We drove around rain forest and old San Juan before our flight (8:30pm), which was nice too.

Thank you for your inputs about Air Flamenco. We finally managed to get them on the phone and book our flights from San Juan Isla grande to Culebra. The departure times are perfect for us as well as their price. We are really excited to get there!!
Thanks a lot!
