open alcohol in cars
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I know in St. John, it is ok to have an open container in your car...I'm not talking about being drunk and driving, but I'm talking about enjoying a beer on the beach at sunset....just curious.

Also, would it be better to buy alcohol in the states, or buy on Culebra...what are the prices of rum?

Would anyone suggest bringing dry goods from home, or will it make that much of a difference in cost?

Are there any places to buy a beach chair or umbrella, or should I bring those as well?

THANKS GUYS!!

I don't think carrying an open container of alcohol in a car is a very smart thing to do anywhere in the carribean. As far as alcohol and dry goods, things are a little more expensive on the island because eveything has to be shipped in from the mainland. If you have a particular brand that you drink you should bring a couple of bottles with you. Also, the island has a few places where you can buy beach chairs and umbrellas. If you're going to buy a beach chair in Culebra you might as well take one from the states along with you. You can just check it in with your luggage and not to worry about buying one or renting one.

In no way am I advocating driving drunk or while impaired ... doing so can result in in tragic injury or death ... not only to yourself, but to other innocent people. Don't do it ... EVER.

Having said that, you will not find the police on Culebra stopping you for an "open container" of beer. But you damn well better be wearing your seatbelt! That they take very seriously. I have witnessed first-hand somebody getting pulled over, getting out of the car to fish their license out of their shorts, placing their beer can on the hood of the car, getting a lecture on seatbelt use, and driving off again with the beer between their legs. Not that it happened to me or anything ... <vbg>

These days, I'd buy everything on Culebra. Years ago the lack of selection and pricing made it better to lug stuff from PR, but things have improved greatly.

You can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas (both at the beach and at Culebra Beach House, a great shop down the street from Dinghy Dock restaurant), which might be an easier option. I'm not sure where you can buy them here...
Frank's other answers are on the money (literally!)

That's just a stupid idea. You want to enjoy alcohol, do it outside of your car man, and dont even think of getting behind the wheel if you get tanked. What's the point of drinking in your car??....get out and do it on the beach.

Even if what Frank says is true, it shouldn't matter. Moral responsibility trumps any legal issues here.

Perhaps we could discuss this sort of "moral responsibility" with the "cut-throat immorality" by the "animals" at the ferry dock on your trip!
<vbg> ... LOL ... :-)
are there any other icons to insert here to indicate it's a joke?

Seriously, I think we can all agree that driving while impaired is stupid. And dangerous. But the original poster had a different question. Hopefully it was answered to his/her satisfaction!

Looking forward to the rest of your trip reports and praying for a happy ending!

I gotcha, Frank. I just call it as I see it. If you were there, I think you would forgive me for my off colour remark. All joking aside, I hope I didn't offend anyone, I was just referring to how people were acting, and trust me, it was a "if ya can't beat them, join them," type situation, so I was right in there, pushing and shoving back, allthought I really wished I didn't have to. It was to the level that I had to do it to prevent myself from getting crushed by luggage!

As for the original post, I know he was just basically wondering if he could just "enjoying a beer" but A beer or a six pack, its still under the influence, and just not a good idea. Even if he wasn't drunk, or truly only had one beer, if he were to get into a random accident, totally irrelated to alcohol, the fact that there was an open container in the car are likely to get him arrested for reckless endangerment, not to mention provide a hell of a lot of fodder for a civil case should he injure someone...even if he wasn't intoxicated per the legal definition.

While the police may, as some suggest, overlook it, I highly recommend doing some legal research, and knowing exactly what the law is. You could catch a cop on a bad day, or get a rookie who is going to stick to the book. You never know...

As for the morally responsible choice, I'll leave that up to your individual conscience, and refrain from any further judgment.
