Trip Report- camping with kids
After spending several years at Brewer’s Bay campground in Tortola, we camped at Playa Flamenco for two weeks in February. I have to say that in comparison, the campground in Culebra is much cleaner and better managed than Tortola. The cost is 20.00 per tent… not campsite. This can be a confusing point. One exception to this rule is hammock-type tents.
There are water stations throughout the campground, and the bathrooms were clean…(although there was no electricity when we there) The showers are outside and have no curtains- so be prepared to relax your standard of hygiene. Flamenco beach was fantastic for our twelve and thirteen year olds. Our tent site was just a few feet from the beach, and the sea was calm enough in some areas to swim and snorkel safely and rough enough for great body surfing in other areas. We felt completely safe at all times, and the kids delighted in playing flashlight tag every night. Mosquitoes and ants did not bother us since we applied insect repellent… A very large iguana frequented our campsite. We went grocery shopping in town every few days and ate frequently at the beach vendors. You can rent a cooler and buy ice from the vendors. In retrospect, I wish we had rented a car since finding rides to and from the campground at night was very difficult.
The kids would agree that the highlight of the vacation was spending two nights in El Yunque on mainland Puerto Rico: http://www.elyunque.com/about.html and taking a twelve-mile hike with our guide, Robin: http://www.elyunque.com/Phillips.htm
This is not a hike for the faint-hearted or those who are out of shape (like me) as Robin had the kids scrambling up a ladder attached to a vertiginous rock face in order to swim at a waterfall. Robin has an amazing amount of knowledge about the rain forest, and I highly recommend this hike for the adventurous..
We had planned to go sailing a lot with Thomas, but we were never able to reach him on his cell phone. This was a disappointment for the kids.
I hope this information is helpful!
