Mosquito Repellent Incense
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I posted a few months back about finding incense in a gift shop on Culebra that worked (for me) to repel mosquitos. I was really surprised it worked, and someone was asking for more information. Sadly, until the mosquitoes in Atlanta reared their ugly heads today, I had forgotten to provide the info.

I brought two kinds back with me from Culebra - Lavender and Lemongrass. Appears to work here in Atlanta as well, although July will surely be a better test than mid-April - LOL! Anyway, it's made by Mereville Trust in India, and contains "natural essential oils from flowers and plants of geranium, citronella, neem, camphor and [lemon grass/lavender]." Website is http://www.merevilletrust.com/

I have to add that it might not work for campers. I had a variety of different brands of incense - with neem, citronella and/or lemongrass on top of the variety of repellant ranging from all natural ingredients to different levels of deet PLUS a neem soap and still came back with a ton of bites - could possibly be that the mosquitoes didn't get me for all I know...but there are still no-see-ums or biting ants to contend with! i camped with three other folks and they all got bit as well - keep in mind, i was the only one of the group who is much, much more susceptible to bites, so you can imagine their own surprise!

I can't sit on Flamenco without a towel, or I get eaten up. I guess they're sand fleas or something, but every time I go there and sit on the soft sand, I come home with little pinpoint red bites all over my ankles! Very attractive - LOL!
