My girlfriend and I spent the first week in April in Culebra and because this forum was so helpful prior to our going, I feel an obligation to post our experiences. I could go on and on so i'll just post our highlights. We flew Isla Nena from San Juan Int'l Airport to and from Culebra and no complaints. A fine little airline that flew on time. We stayed at Villa Fulladoza, a great place. Reasonably priced, clean, roomy with a kitchen, and a balcony overlooking the bay. Definately recommend it. Some of the other places to stay recently mentioned on this forum are pricey and not worth it in my opinion.
We visited more than nine beaches and snorkled to our hearts content. I've snorkled at many places, but I have never seen so many great places on one island with unbelievable coral, fish and even a few hawksbill turtles. Every beach has it's own character. Some you drive to, others you hike 30 to 45 minutes to get to. We rented our jeep from Jerry's. He's a fair guy and his hand drawn maps must been seen to be believed. Renting a boat from Butch at Culebra Boat Rentals was definately worth it because Tortuga Beach in Culebrita may the most beautiful of all.
Ah, the restaurants... We ate at Juanita Bananas twice, that says it all. The food at Bahia Marina at Ocean View is excellent (not to be confused with Ricci's at Bahia Marina). You've got to try the mixed seafood cooked with sweet garlic. The food at Barbara Rosa's was delicious and the lively discussion that followed concerning the politics of development was enlightning. There are definately strong feelings by some of the local folks towards the newer "resorts." We were also drawn to the bar at the Hotel Puerto Rico. Talk about an old hotel that's surely seen alot, this is the place. I also had a beer at Happy Landings. As the only non local there, it was a gas. Saturday night at Mamacita's rocks. Like i said i could go on. Have a great time if you're going, dream on when you've returned.
