ok, be patient with me. this is a long one. i am writing mostly for those of you who are planning a trip to culebra for the first time and would like some words of advise.
my husband and i just got back from culebra last week. we had an awesome time... i mean awesome. i would like to share some of our experiences so that perhaps others will benefit.
we took a taxi with padin van service from sj to fajardo 60.00 + tip/couple (1-787-644-3091) we made it on time for the 3 pm ferry. i will never do that again. i became very sea sick about 40 minutes into the trip. the entire trip lasted almost two hours so i was very miserable. later in the week i flew to fajardo with vieques air link (1-787-741-8331), $28.00 one way, fly time 15 minutes--- can't beat that if you get sick like me. the 9 passenger airplane experience was terrifying but i actually did not get sick. i went to the main island for about 4 days and returned to culebra via airplane again... only way to go for me!!!
culebra was magnificent. the beaches are gorgeous!!! we rented a jeep from carlos' and he was very helpful - about $55/day since we had it for a week. having a jeep was certainly necessary. we met some people that rented scooters and they were not able to do the kind of exploring we did with the jeep. they did have a lot of fun, however!
we stayed at maritza's. what a wonderful lady! she was so helpful. i think we became friends! her place was clean, had everything we needed, a/c- which hepled a lot with the mosquitos. she contributed greatly to our experience. (check out maritza's guest house under shelter area of this website).
we ate at almost every restaurant in the island. would suggest la poncena, la pista, barbara rosas, la bahia (only opened th- sunday), dinghy dock, and the kiosks at flamenco beach. there is also a kiosk on the way to flamenco between la pista and la poncena that is really good. we did not eat at mamacitas. every time we went there the wait was too long. i would strongly suggest that if you want to eat a mamacitas or dinghy dock you show up early- the latest by 6:30 pm. otherwise you'll end up waiting a while and they may run out of food. it this happens, do not panic, try la poncena or la pista. (by the way, la poncena seems to be closed sundays and mondays). you will pay twice the price for meals at mamacitas or dinghy dock than at the other restaurants... and they serve great food as well.
try el batey on friday and saturday nights. great dancing. mamacitas has drums on saturday night.
my husband had a great time snorkleing at carlos rosario, tamarindo, flamenco, melones!!! i tried it but unfortunately got sea sick.... i know i am a wimp when it comes to this kind of thing. however, that did not stop me from enjoying the beatiful culebra beaches.
i would also like to mention that we met some great people in our trip. you know who you are guys!!! they also helped make this trip wonderful for us!!! thank you.
we took the van service from fajardo to sj, ilca was great in helping us organize that. her and her husband own padin van service. we were sad to leave the island. we are already planning our second trip.... this time with the kids!!!!!!!!
we are thankful for such a great trip!!!!!!!
