It is easy to get around most of the island on bike, however, it is hilly in places and the ride can be strenuous in some areas, especially if you want to go out to the eastern end of the island. Around town is quite simple (and in fact, you'll have an easier time getting around on bike rather than car if it's crowded). The ride to Flamenco has one especially tough hill on the way back to town.
No one will mess with your bikes while you are at the beach, but it is always safer to lock them while not in your sight.
