Ferry weather -- and waves
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Greetings. My wife, son and I are making our second trip to Culebra in a week. We had a great time last year, with one exception: the ferry ride from Fajardo to Culebra was terrible.

Because of the wind direction and force, people told us, there were massive waves, which pitched the boat about tremendously. I have no doubt it was safe, but my wife and many other passengers got sick.

I should also say that the weather on the island itself was great: good swimming and snorkeling and just a bit of rain. And the trip back was rough, but not nearly as bad.

How is it this year? Anyone been on the ferry recently? Big waves?

Much thanks,

Matt.

Hey ... the conditions on the sea cannot be predicted, I have seen changes on it from 1 foot waves, to 3 feet choppy seas, in the same day.
On wintertime, cold fronts and winds from the north make sea get choppy.
I have been navigating those waters for over 22 years, and it is not an easy trip, for small boats.
Ferry, however, is like a 90foot boat, and its slow movement have that effect in people.
Stay always on the stern, ( the aft most part of the boat ) there you will feel less movement.

Enjoy your stay.

We just got back from Culebra and we got sick on the ferry too. Here's some additional advice we received while in Culebra:

Medicine: Stock up on Dramamine. Not only for the ferry rides but for any ventures up the narrow, winding roads to the mountains in Puerto Rico. Also they make drops that you put behind your ears that supposed to work wonders. Perhaps without the drowsiness? Maybe someone else will have info on these.

Don't drink fluids: Fluids will slosh around in your stomach and may make you feel sicker. We were told by a man who used to work on a cruiseship that eating soda crackers prior to the trip helps absorb the fluid in your stomach. He also said drinking tea is the only exception to the no fluids rule.

Stay in the breeze.
Focus on the horizon.
Keep busy, get your mind off it!

There were some gusty, five minute downpours while there - we enjoyed watching the storm clouds roll in from Flamenco Beach. Gave a little break in the heat too!
