Horseback riding and beaches
Culebra, Puerto Rico

The following post was made by Teresa Tallevast, from Culebra National Wildlife Refuge in reply to a question. I think it is worth its own topic!:

"Please do not ride horseback on beaches. Sea turtles, depending on the species, usually nest either in vegetation or in sand near the vegetation and nest contents are easily destroyed by the weight of horses, cattle, vehicles, etc. Horseback riding is actually illegal on Zoni, Brava, and Resaca beaches March-November. Also deep footprints left in soft sands of Zoni, Brava, and Resaca beaches can entrap sea turtle hatchlings trying to make their way from their nest to the water's edge. So a good rule of thumb May-September is to walk as much as is possible below the high tide line on those 3 beaches so that your footprints will be washed away by the incoming tide. Sea turtles nest on the smaller islands too so we ask that people please observe these concerns there, as well. We'll be happy to orient you on good nature experiences here in areas safe for the public if you call our office to set up a visit with our staff. 787-742-0115. Thank you for your cooperation! Culebra National Wildlife Refuge"
