culebra vs. vieques advice

I will be visiting PR 8/8 - 16 with my 2 kids (ages 15 & 17). We planned to spend the first 4 nights on Culebra and then return to the mainland to do the rainforest & Old San Juan. After reading through many of these postings I'm torn between staying on Culebra vs. Vieques. It looks like there is more to do on Vieques than Culebra - if it were just me I would be fine with a book and a beach, but keep in mind I've got 2 teens to occupy. They enjoy snorkeling and being in and around the water but what if it rains... is there anything to do on culebra? Would it be smart to spend 2 nights on each island to keep some variety and level of night life (biobay, ice cream runs, movies...)? I wish my kids would hit the sack at 9pm, but that's highly unlikely unless someones got the barcardi pumped into the drinking water.

I'm so excited for the trip and really want to plan an adventure... as this may be our last 'real' family vacation together before they start leaving for college. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think that it is a short enough trip that you should stick with Culebra. I'm not sure that there is that much more to to on Vieques than Culebra for teens. While it would be nice for them to enjoy the biobay, good snorkeling on Vieques is less accessable than on Culebra.

Consider renting a boat from Butch at Culebra Boat Rental for a day or two. We did and had a blast snorkeling from the boat....it was the highlight of our trip.

Snorkeling from shore is easy on Culebra. Make the short hike over to Carlos Rosario and try the left side as well as Carlos Rosario. Even Melones (which is close to town) is a great place to snorkel.

I'd wager that they'll enjoy the old army tanks that are at the left end of Flamenco Beach too and it seems as though there are plenty of attractive young ladies to meet at the beach too.

For a 4 day trip, Culebra will be perfect I think. Have a great trip (wish I were going).

Hi I will be traveling this winter with my kids, ages 21 and 17. We plan on two nights in rain forrest, 2 nights in Vieques and 3 nights in Culebra.....breaking it up is a good idea for us because the kids would be looking for more action than our favorite island, Culebra can give them....I hope this helps.

For your kids, Culebra or Vieques is the same, there are no DISCOTECAS, or good fun for teens on either island.
Most of the fun must be planned around the beaches, and some hiking.
In Culebra most good restaurants close by 9/10pm, in Vieques maybe a little later.
Grocerie stores close earlier.
So... Plan around the beaches, rent a car and/or boat, have a good camera, and enjoy.
In both islands everything takes time, do not go with a rush, relax and enjoy.

4 days is short. travel betweeen islands is not simnple. recommend you stay on one island. Kids will have enough to do for that long. Snorkeling is easier and better on culebra. Beaches are the best. If you choose Vieques, concentrate on hte old navy beaches at the Old Camp garcia.
