Is it feasible for novice kayakers to kayak to culebrita? There will be two of us, and I would like to avoid doing the whole group tour thing... Has anyone done this, and if so, can the currents become a major factor?

Mikey,

I would not recommend kayaking to culebrita. There is a channel that runs in front of culebrita that at times is infested with hammer heads. If a current tipped your kayak over, you might be endanger. The other parts of the island impose no threat.
Good Luck

Unless you are an experienced " KAYAKER " and an experienced adveturer, you may not take the chance.
However, if the sea is calmed, you can take the path to La Pela, which is still quite an adventure, rest there for a while, then take your kayak to the west part of Culebrita, which can easily be seen from La Pela.
The west side of the island is less visited by boaters, but you can get there.
Again to get to La Pela is an adventure itself.

Another option is Luis Pena. Have you checked that one ?

Nice stay,

I think Diego doesn't want "tourists" infesting what is normally a quiet, empty and pristine beach.... Hence, the hammerhead story... or he could be telling the truth... but if you're a local, I respect your feelings for wanting to preserve Culebrita and protect it from tourist inhabitants...
