Arroz, I think I remember that post. It did not sound very appealing. Keeping that in mind and the additional fact that there are children involved, I would think single speed simple bikes are the "bike-de-jour". My thinking is this...the kids will do a lot of walking up the hills and one would want to walk the hills with the kids rather than leaving them behind. So keep it simple, stay away from the gear shifting problem and hard worn out break pads. Go basic.
Still, I would price Dick and Cathie for a VW Thing, they are cheap and in the long run make for a less complicated vacation.
BTW, I have not been to Culebra in December, we are going in January and reservations are never required then, so someone else will have to chime in on your timing and the need for reservations.
