9am Ferry from Fajardo to Culebra

I visited Culebra on August 11-13, 2009 and wanted to pass along my ferry experience.
Stayed with family around San Juan. Borrowed their car to drive to Fajardo to arrive by 8am to buy my ferry ticket. All 9am Culebra ferry tickets had been sold the previous day. Took the 3pm ferry with no problem, just not as much time on the beach.

When you purchase your tickets from Fajardo to Culebra: remember to purchase round trip; and
They now charge for items larger than a personal item. $2/cooler, $1/rolling carry-on size bag, etc. Also buy those tickets for a Round Trip.

I have other tips from my trip but I'm going to post them as separate topics.

I would totally do this trip again with a few slight changes

Hi Jean,

Just a tip in case you go back to Culebra on the ferry:

I visited PR from August 9-15th and went to Culebra for a day to scuba dive with my boyfriend and my 16 year old son. I did some research online before we went to PR and read that you could purchase ferry tickets the day PRIOR to going on the ferry, which is what we did. We purchased the round trip tickets the day prior and got to the Ferry at 8:00 am the next day and had no problems what so ever.

We plan to go back in May and stay in Culebra for 3 days - I can't wait!

And some of the cab drivers noted in past posts will also purchase the round trip tickets for you and have them for you when you arrive.

Which cab drivers? Can you share the info? Been trying calling for three dais and no one answers the phone at the ticket place in Fajardo.

Good afternoon,

It is very difficult/impossible to reach the ferry folks by phone in my experience (live in Culebra).

Additionally, year-round the ferries are not as crowded as in summer months. Most times of the year you can be at the dock one hour prior & not have a problem purchasing tickets. During high ferry traffic times we will purchase tickets for our guests with reservations when made far enough in advance to mail (the tickets).

Finally got through the Autoridad de Transporte Maritimo and made my reservations (fm Virginia) for the Fajardo-Culebra, round trip. The system has been down and up like a roller coaster but finally gotthrough an got them and they already cleared my bank. Very pleasant and smooth transaction. So just keep calling and say hello and Merry Christmas to Paulino! This is our first trip to Culebra after living 23 years on the main island (I know, shame on me).
